Cancelled Minecraft-Like Game is Making a Comeback

The game Hytale, a competitor to Minecraft, is back in development. Hypixel Studios, the original creators, have regained the rights to the game from Riot Games. Work on Hytale started in 2015 with funding from Riot Games, who later fully acquired the project in 2020. The game was previously cancelled in June 2025, but now development is resuming.

Hypixel Studio started by creating a popular custom server for the game Minecraft, offering players unique mini-games and content. Building on that success, they decided to develop their own original sandbox game, Hytale, to rival Minecraft. Hytale will also feature user-created content and mods, like what made Hypixel popular, but will add more RPG elements, including combat and dungeon exploration. Like Minecraft, Hytale’s worlds will be procedurally generated.

Hytale Will Continue Development Independently, Early Access Release Date TBD

Simon Collins-Laflamme, co-founder of Hypixel, announced on the official Hytale website that development of the game is resuming. He’s personally committed to funding the project for the next 10 years after regaining the rights from Riot Games. To get things moving again, 30 developers who previously worked on Hytale have been brought back on board to continue where they left off before the game was cancelled.

While an exact release date isn’t available yet, the team at Hytale says they’ll share more details soon. Currently, the game is planned to launch on Windows, and they’re working on versions for Linux and Mac. There are no plans to release Hytale on consoles at this time, and any potential releases on other platforms would be much further in the future.

So, the Hytale team gave us a heads-up on what we can expect when early access finally drops, and what’s still in the works. When it launches, here’s what we’ll be able to jump into:

  • Exploration Mode
  • Creative Mode
  • Modding

Although a detailed plan isn’t available yet, future updates to Hytale after the initial early access release will include additional features.

  • Mini-Games
  • Adventure Mode

Although mini-games are a major attraction on Hypixel and in the upcoming game Hytale, Collins-Laflamme points out that the systems needed for these games aren’t quite finished yet. Fortunately, Hytale has a team specifically focused on building mini-games, so players can look forward to more being added over time. Collins-Laflamme also cautions that Hytale might be released as an early access version that isn’t fully complete. However, they hope players will accept any initial imperfections and offer helpful feedback to help the development team make the game the best it can be.
