Cancelled Sequel To Classic D&D Game Revealed

Summary

  • Plans for a canceled sequel to Planescape: Torment have been revealed.
  • Planescape: Unraveled game was pitched by David Gaider during their tenure at Beamdog.
  • Wizards of the Coast on board for Planescape: Unraveled, but the project couldn’t secure funding.

A previous employee from Beamdog has disclosed details about an abandoned follow-up to one of the top-rated Dungeons & Dragons video games ever made. Unfortunately, this project was scrapped because they couldn’t secure a publisher, even though Wizards of the Coast had agreed to cooperate.

In the realm of video gaming, Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the grandest titles ever created, and it’s expected to inspire a wave of Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games in the near future. Interestingly, the road to this point wasn’t always smooth sailing for tabletop RPGs in video game development. For quite some time, companies were hesitant to embrace the D&D license, instead preferring to develop their own worlds and gaming systems.

As a dedicated fan, one game that left an indelible mark on me is Planescape: Torment, a masterpiece set in and around the city of Sigil – the hub of the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. Ex-Beamdog employee David Gaider recently disclosed that a sequel, titled Planescape: Unraveled, was proposed but unfortunately didn’t make it to production.

The Road to Summerfall – Part 3 I haven’t talked a lot about the two years I spent at Beamdog (between 2016 and 2018) mainly because, well, ultimately nothing came of it. I worked on two projects, both of which ended up cancelled. Still, I think the time I spent there was ultimately worthwhile.— David Gaider (@davidgaider.bsky.social)2025-04-15T01:48:06.256Z

Planescape: Unraveled Could Have Revived The Setting Way Earlier

As per Gaider’s plan, the protagonist of Planescape: Unraveled was envisioned to be Ravel Puzzlewell, a significant antagonist from Planescape: Torment. The gameplay would have allowed players to navigate through one of three facets of Ravel, as they uncovered the mystery behind her own identity.

Wizards of the Coast supported the project but refused to finance it. Unfortunately, Planescape: Unraveled couldn’t find a publisher and was abandoned. It’s regrettable that this happened so many years ago as it would have greater chances of success today, given the high demand for Dungeons & Dragons video games among fans.

In 2023, a sequel-like story for Planescape: Torment was introduced when the setting returned to Dungeons & Dragons with the campaign titled “Turn of Fortune’s Wheel.” Characters like Morte were part of this new tale, establishing that events from Planescape: Torment are considered canon in the tabletop RPG. Despite the cancellation of Planescape: Unraveled, fans of the original can still ponder about what might have been.
