As a long-time fan of the iconic Mega Man series, I can’t help but feel both excited and frustrated with Capcom’s recent updates regarding the future of this beloved franchise. Having grown up with Mega Man games being an integral part of my childhood, it’s disheartening to see such a significant gap between mainline releases.

As a dedicated fan of the Mega Man series, I’m always on the lookout for the latest news and updates. And boy, do we have some exciting developments to discuss! Capcom has finally shared some insights into their plans for this iconic franchise that last saw a mainline entry in 2018. While we’ve welcomed collections of past games and even ventured into mobile gaming, the anticipation among fans is palpable as we hunger for more information about what’s next in store for our favorite blue-armored hero.

In Japan, the initial Mega Man game was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1987, which went on to be known as “Rockman.” Over the years, the series has grown with numerous mainline titles, the most recent being Mega Man 11, launched in 2018. Mega Man remains one of Capcom’s most popular franchises, yet there hasn’t been a true successor to its latest game. However, Capcom has publicly stated that they continue to develop plans for this cherished franchise.

At the June 20th shareholders meeting of Capcom, the Japanese gaming company mentioned their plans for producing Mega Man games more frequently during the Q&A session. Previously, they had shared with investors that they would thoughtfully consider the development of future Mega Man titles.

How Many Units Has The Mega Man Franchise Sold?

  • 41 million

At the latest forum, Capcom was pressed for information about their future plans for the beloved franchise, Mega Man. Capcom acknowledged the significance of this series by referring to it as one of their prized assets. According to a 2023 financial statement, approximately 41 million copies of the Mega Man games have been sold. In contrast, Resident Evil, another Capcom title, has shipped a staggering 154 million units, while Monster Hunter has surpassed 100 million in sales as per recent data.

During a recent shareholders gathering, Capcom disclosed that sales for older games such as “Resident Evil 7: Biohazard” (2017) and “Monster Hunter: World” (2018) have been thriving due to the transition of the gaming industry towards digital sales. Previously, Capcom noted, these titles would be available for purchase at physical stores for approximately half a year. However, with the advent of direct online sales, companies now have the flexibility to extend the market life of their past catalogues and adopt more effective pricing models.

The most recent addition to the Mega Man franchise is the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, which came out in April 2023 and includes the six primary games from the Mega Man Battle Network spin-off series of RPGs. Capcom launched a mobile game called Mega Man X DIVE in 2020, but they plan to end its global service on July 30. However, an offline version of this game with extra content was moved to Steam and mobile platforms last September.
