For instance, the release of MvC Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics has brought modern systems up-to-date with a proper online version of MvC2, which in turn has fueled interest in Capcom’s iconic crossover IP. Given the increasing frequency of SNK collaborations and potential challenges associated with another collaboration with Marvel, it seems that Capcom vs. SNK might be on the horizon instead.
The Marvel vs Capcom series found itself in a standstill following the underwhelming reception of Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite, a game with strong mechanics but criticized for its perceived weak roster and decrease in visual appeal. The release of Capcom Fighting Collection sparked anticipation for a new Darkstalkers, and now MvC Fighting Collection has done the same for Marvel. However, it appears that recent releases related to SNK hint at another larger project in development. With a new era of Fatal Fury set for next year and the upcoming Capcom Fighting Collection 2 including CvS games, we may soon witness Capcom vs SNK 3.

With Terry now part of the seasonal update plan for Street Fighter 6 DLC, it’s clear that Capcom is open to featuring a borrowed character as the main focus for an extended period in their premier game. The upcoming game “Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves,” set for release around April 2025, has already been confirmed by SNK at this year’s Tokyo Game Show to include characters from “Street Fighter” as part of its first season DLC. Specifically, Ken Masters and Chun-Li will be joining the action in South Town, echoing the integration of “FF” characters into “SF6.” This crossover move is intended to reignite past connections between the companies, although no footage of these characters has been shown yet, and the rest of the season’s DLC fighters are still under wraps. The focus on this collaboration is evidently a strategic effort to strengthen the relationship between the two companies.

The new Street Fighter 6 brings a fresh wave of characters to the franchise, and it’s possible that Fatal Fury could follow suit with the same enthusiasm. While Rock Howard was initially introduced in Garou: Mark of the Wolves back in 1999, the main Fatal Fury series has been inactive for so long that the younger design of Terry Bogard from before a certain time jump is more commonly seen. Unlike King of Fighters, which is an SNK crossover despite having its own storyline, the bold direction of City of the Wolves will be a significant progression for the Fatal Fury series in decades.
A Concept Has Likely Been in the Works Since 2022

The posters for the fighting game tournament, designed by artists Shinkiro and Eisuke Ogura with characters from both Capcom and SNK companies, were seemingly just a tribute to their shared past. However, as Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001 was included in that year’s event lineup, this collaboration unexpectedly reignited enthusiasm for crossovers. The inclusion of Terry in SF6 has been well-received by fans of both franchises and more is planned, yet it’s interesting how casually this dynamic emerged. This is quite different from the MvC series, which may struggle to recapture the spirit of its earlier versions.
Bypassing the Red Tape of Capcom Licensing Marvel Characters
A key challenge that may continue to decrease the odds of future Marvel vs. Capcom titles getting made lies in navigating the massively increased status of the Marvel brand when compared to the early 2000s. Working around the scale of the MCU’s success and the business incentives of Disney as an owner can make it especially difficult to collect a large cast of characters from different franchises, a huge shift from the arcade asset reuse that drove MvC‘s creation.
In a different scenario, one might liken another “Capcom vs. SNK” to both parties mutually participating in licensing a vast array of characters without having to tackle legal issues. For instance, the absence of X-Men in “Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite” stems from factors beyond its creation process. Consequently, “CvS3” might steer clear of such core challenges as it is ideally placed to potentially bring back most characters from its predecessor’s roster.
SNK Might Be Ready for Another Shot at a Major Crossover
After encountering some rough patches following the issues with SVC Chaos, SNK has managed to bounce back quite impressively since the launch of King of Fighters 15. Meanwhile, Capcom seems to be quite busy with their ongoing projects. It’s conceivable that SNK could step up and create the next installment in the CvS series, tailoring it in a manner similar to CotW.
In a comparison between the 39-character roster of KOF15 and the smaller cast of SF6, which leans towards realism, it seems wiser for a sequel to handle a roster as expansive as that seen in the last Capcom vs. SNK title. Post-release, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will undergo its own growth period, but this doesn’t mean its developers can’t start exploring ways to maximize their engine capabilities for future updates.
