2018 saw the release of Capcom’s remastered version of “Onimusha: Warlords”. Seven years later, in May, Capcom will unveil a remastered edition of “Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny”. The following year will bring a new installment titled “Onimusha: Way of the Sword”. Motohide Eshiro, who was the original director of “Onimusha 2” in 2002, is back to oversee its remaster. At Capcom, he primarily functions as a producer, having previously worked on games like the “Ace Attorney” series, “Okamiden”, and “DMC: Devil May Cry”.
Game Rant recently conversed with Motohide Eshiro (through a translator) at Capcom’s San Francisco office, discussing the remaster of Onimusha 2 and the potential future of the series. Eshiro shared that while Onimusha 2 was initially intended after Onimusha: Warlords, unforeseen circumstances and timing led the team to work on different projects. The team reunited to tackle Onimusha 2 due to the development of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. With this remaster and a new game in production, some fans might wonder if remasters for Onimusha 3: Demon Siege and Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams are under consideration.
Could Onimusha 3 and Dawn of Dreams Remasters Happen?
It’s important to clarify that he didn’t contribute to these two projects, and his statements are neither confirmations nor hints about them. Instead, they originate from Eshiro, who is a fan of the Onimusha series. When asked if such Onimusha remasters might occur, he expressed his opinion.
He fervently wishes for the return of those games, either as remasters or in some other form, allowing fans another chance to enjoy them on contemporary gaming systems. He’d find joy in their reappearance at some point in the future.
Expanding the World of Onimusha
It’s not just Eshiro who is eager for an Onimusha comeback; a sizable portion of its fanbase shares this excitement. Notably, Jean Reno, who played Jacques Blanc in Onimusha 3, has shown interest in reprising his role if the game is revived. Furthermore, when asked about his favorite aspects of the Onimusha series, from working on Onimusha 2 in the early 2000s to its remaster in 2025 and what’s coming with Onimusha: Way of Sword, he emphasized expanding the Onimusha universe both literally and supernaturally, as well as creating more interactive experiences for players within the series.
For over two decades, the focus has been on broadening the universe of Onimusha, incorporating innovative gameplay mechanics, intensifying action sequences, and enriching the games with diverse features. This way, players can experience a multitude of elements that make up the Onimusha franchise. Next year, we’ll see the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, but he expresses a desire for future Onimusha installments to further expand the world even more. His aim is to bring the game to an ever-growing number of players, hence his hope that the Onimusha universe keeps expanding in the years to come.
It is yet to be determined how the Onimusha universe will grow further, however, with the recent remastered versions offering fresh experiences and Onimusha: Way of the Sword emphasizing captivating characters, a backdrop in Kyoto, and improving the franchise’s sword combat, the boundaries of Onimusha have definitely broadened significantly over the past two decades.
