Individuals who have been into PC gaming for quite a while likely recall some challenging experiences with Games for Windows LIVE, and it’s re-emerging to bring fresh troubles for certain Capcom games.
In 2021, I was bummed to find that Capcom had taken down several of their games from Steam, including Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter x Tekken, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, and both Lost Planet titles. It’s the second Lost Planet game that’s particularly on my mind right now.
Not all games utilizing the service were removed, and a few, such as Resident Evil 5, have been revised to operate with Valve’s Steamworks platform. However, some of the games mentioned earlier are still not accessible for purchase.
Except for Street Fighter IV, now superseded by Ultra Street Fighter IV, the remaining unavailable games were updated today to eliminate GFWL. However, in the case of Lost Planet 2, the elimination has led to some additional problems, essentially rendering the game nearly impossible to play. (Reported by IGN)
A Co-Op Game With No Co-Op
Due to the absence of Games for Windows Live (GFWL) in Lost Planet 2, players now find their previous save games impossible to access, necessitating a fresh start. Furthermore, this change has resulted in the elimination of the game’s entire online functionality.
In my gaming experience, I’d say that Lost Planet 2 predominantly shines as a cooperative adventure. The single-player aspect is more like a tutorial or introduction, designed to familiarize me with the game’s universe and prepare me for the main event: teaming up with others in the multiplayer mode.
Currently, the gaming community playing this game is relatively small yet devoted. However, it seems that the recent update, released four years post the game’s removal from the store due to dealing with GFWL, hasn’t been met with enthusiasm by its players.

In contrast to current live-service games, Lost Planet 2 was published much earlier. Nevertheless, it serves as an illustration of what happens to all online-centric games when their online features are eventually discontinued.
In this specific scenario, there’s reason to believe that the game and its multiplayer could potentially return, given they incorporate Steamworks integration, similar to certain titles from Capcom. However, for now, Lost Planet 2 primarily remains a cooperative-centric title without co-operative play.
