Captain America: Brave New World Falls Short

Summary

  • Captain America: Brave New World opened strong with $100 million but declined steeply in its second weekend.
  • The film grossed $414 million globally but fell short of expectations, affecting its box office campaign.
  • Despite being the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, it might not make the top ten list due to upcoming releases.

Captain America’s Brave New World has been playing in theaters for about nine weeks now, but surprisingly, it hasn’t yet surpassed the expectations that were initially set for it at an earlier stage.

Brave New World” started off strong with a $100 million domestic four-day debut, exceeding expectations. However, its second weekend saw a significant drop of -68%, raising concerns about its commercial performance. While some viewers consider it an acceptable or average film at best, others find it subpar. With the third-lowest Rotten Tomatoes score among MCU movies, behind “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” “Quantumania,” and “Eternals,” it’s clear that, at its best, “Captain America: Brave New World” is not the strongest Captain America film.

It’s Over For Captain America: Brave New World’s Box Office Campaign

$414 Million Is All It Would End Up With

According to Box Office Mojo and analyst Luiz Fernando, Captain America: Brave New World earned approximately $38,000 on its ninth Wednesday, representing a 71.2% decrease compared to the previous week. This significant drop allowed the film to surpass the $200 million mark in U.S. box office sales, making it the second movie of the year to achieve this milestone. As of now, the movie’s global earnings stand at an impressive $414 million, with $214 million coming from international ticket sales.

In the movie “Captain America: Brave New World,” there was a significant decrease in viewership during its ninth week, which isn’t unusual. However, this drop was not improved by the digital release on April 15, making it accessible to those who were late to the Anthony Mackie-led gathering. Now, these viewers can enjoy the movie from home by purchasing or renting it in 4K Ultra HD quality on Prime Video and Apple TV, starting at $24.99. Given this, the film’s current domestic box office total of $440 (down from $1,750 last week) might decline even further in the coming days. Regardless, it’s clear that this is the end of Captain America’s run at the box office.

You can now watch Captain America: Brave New World digitally, it’s accessible on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video. If you’re a Disney+ subscriber, look forward to streaming it from May or June.

Typically, a studio would be delighted if a tentpole movie earned $200 million in the domestic market. However, that’s not the case for Marvel Studios with Captain America: Brave New World, given its production budget of $180 million. Moreover, reaching $200 million after nine weeks (62 days) is unusually slow for a major blockbuster, especially an MCU film. For context, the first Captain America movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, topped out at $176 million domestically but took only 17 days for Captain America: The Winter Soldier to reach $200 million and eventually earn $260 million; Captain America: Civil War achieved this milestone in just five days.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about the box office performance of “Captain America: Brave New World.” Currently, it ranks fourth among the year’s biggest earners, trailing behind “Ne Zha 2,” “A Minecraft Movie,” and “Detective Chinatown 1990.” However, with the imminent release of heavy-hitters like “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” “Superman,” and “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” there’s a chance my favorite Captain America film since 2011 might miss out on making it into the top ten highest-grossing movies of the year. The competition is fierce, but I can hardly wait!
