As a seasoned Marvel fan and gaming enthusiast who’s been following the MCU since its inception, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia at the news that Robert Downey Jr., aka Iron Man, is reprising his role as Doctor Doom. The timing couldn’t be more ironic, with the announcement overshadowing the release of the first Captain America film without Chris Evans, Captain America: Brave New World.

In a significant turn of events, Robert Downey Jr. is set to make a grand return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time portraying the menacing character, Doctor Doom. One of his fellow Avengers actors playfully remarked that RDJ might have outshone him when the news about Downey’s comeback was disclosed on the same day as the trailer launch for “Captain America: Brave New World” at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).

A special sneak peek of the upcoming “Captain America: Brave New World,” featuring Anthony Mackie, was unveiled at SDCC. This will be the first Captain America film without Chris Evans as the main character. Mackie, along with his co-stars Tim Blake Nelson, Danny Ramirez, and Giancarlo Esposito (who plays Sidewinder), made an appearance on stage. The upcoming Marvel movie marks Ford’s debut in the MCU as President Thaddeus Ross, also known as the Red Hulk. However, the excitement about upcoming Marvel productions was largely eclipsed by the news of Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, this time portraying the supervillain Doctor Doom after his departure from the franchise following Iron Man’s death in “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019. One Captain America actor shared his thoughts on Downey Jr.’s Marvel Cinematic Universe comeback.

I sat down with Entertainment Tonight recently, and we chatted about Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As I shared my chuckle-worthy reaction to the whole situation, I reminisced about the excitement surrounding the Captain America: Brave New World trailer. I was feeling pretty good because I had Ford by my side, who knew me personally.

Mackie recounted an amusing incident involving Robert Downey Jr., which took place prior to learning that Downey would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He stated, “Let me tell you some truths about my relationship with RDJ and why he shouldn’t have done this to me,” Mackie said, grinning broadly at the camera. According to his account, they were on set (without specifying the film title), and everyone was waiting outside their trailers for Downey to decide who would join him for lunch. Mackie felt excluded until a golf cart arrived with Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) inside. He then spotted Chris Evans (Captain America) and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk) in the same golf cart. Mackie believed he was left out until the cart came to fetch him. Excited, he hopped on board, and they headed to Downey’s base camp. Mackie shared that Downey’s chef had prepared a goat for him, saying, “He cooked me a goat; he could have let me have that day.” When asked about his hopes for the next Avengers movie, given that Downey was reprising his role as the supervillain, Mackie joked, “I hope I get to punch RDJ in the face for feeding me goat and then stealing my day. You can’t give a grown man goat and then steal his day. What’s wrong with you?” Mackie may have been referring to their set in Captain America: Civil War as he shared this story on Live With Kelly And Michael. The ET host suggested there would be an epic battle, and since Mackie plays Captain America, he might encounter Downey’s Doctor Doom. When asked about the same topic by The Hollywood Reporter, Mackie reiterated his desire to confront Downey, saying, “I’m going to punch him in the face, and then I’m going to ask for some goat,” before laughing.

Mackie said:

1. I should eliminate him before anything else happens.

As a gamer and avid Marvel fan, I’ve been fortunate enough to share the screen with some fantastic actors in the MCU. That includes Anthony Mackie, with whom I’ve fought villains alongside in films like “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), and “Avengers: Endgame” (2019). We’ve got more adventures ahead, teaming up again for the upcoming “Doomsday” (2026) and “Secret Wars” (2027). It’s no surprise that we’ve formed a strong bond over the years. Jeremy Renner once spoke about the camaraderie in the MCU, saying he’d rather serve time in jail with me than accomplish something amazing solo – proof enough of the closeness I share with my co-stars!

Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025.
