Captain America Brave New World’s Box Office Might Not Be As Bad As Expected

Summary

  • Captain America: Brave New World is tracking to surpass previous franchise films in ticket pre-sales by about 40%.
  • Projections indicate the film could open as high as $105 million domestically, with a total haul between $207 million and $274 million.
  • Overseas pre-sales are promising, with Chinese audiences showing strong support on the first day, exceeding numbers from previous films in the franchise.

With the worldwide cinema screens preparing for the debut of “Captain America: Brave New World” and its promotional journey already in full swing, there’s some positive news for Kevin Feige, Bob Iger, and anyone eagerly anticipating the film’s box office success: it appears to be on track to open with higher earnings than initially anticipated.

As the countdown continues for Marvel’s upcoming Valentine release, “Captain America: Brave New World”, marketing efforts are at their peak. This is Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first film of the year, following a gap since July 26, 2024, when “Deadpool & Wolverine” graced global screens. The ticket pre-sales for “Captain America: Brave New World” in its initial two days have exceeded previous franchise flops like “The Marvels” by approximately 40%, and are on par with box office performers such as “Eternals”, “Black Widow”, and “Dune: Part Two”.

Captain America: Brave New World Is Projected To Open as High as $105 Million

…and at Least $86 Million

Initially, predictions for Captain America: Brave New World suggested a potential domestic opening weekend earnings of up to $95 million. However, just before the Super Bowl, updated forecasts from Box Office Theory indicate that the movie’s three-day domestic debut could be as low as $86 million and potentially reach as high as $105 million. In total, the film’s domestic earnings are now projected to fall within the range of $207 million to $274 million, which is slightly higher than the earlier prediction of $195 million to $280 million.

In a similar fashion to its U.S. pre-sales, the overseas pre-sales for Captain America: Brave New World are equally impressive. As reported by Luiz Fernando on X, the Chinese audience showed their enthusiasm for the film with a whopping $346,000 earned during the first day of pre-sales. It’s worth noting that even blockbusters like Deadpool & Wolverine, The Batman, and Dune: Part Two failed to match these numbers, with earnings of $221,000, $175,000, and $87,000 respectively.

If Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford’s potential shop opening surpasses the higher end of the $105 million prediction, it would mark a significant increase compared to Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s $95 million three-day debut. However, it wouldn’t be as substantial when considering that Captain America: Civil War launched with an impressive $179 million. It’s worth noting that Captain America: Civil War was essentially an Avengers film in essence, boasting most of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s major stars.

It’s clear that forecasts and predictions for the box office performance of “Captain America: Brave New World” are uncertain, but historically, they tend to increase following the Super Bowl. However, there is skepticism among the general audience due to multiple reshoots, which isn’t helping its prospects. With a production budget estimated at around $180 million (as reported by The Hollywood Reporter), Marvel and Disney executives would likely aim for the movie to earn at least $500 million globally just to break even. Given that it lacks significant competition and hulk-enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating a red version of the green rage, achieving this figure seems possible.
