Summary
- Domestic opening exceeded expectations at $88 million
- Overseas earnings stood at $92 million despite underperforming estimates
- Mixed reviews didn’t hinder box office success, projected to hit $100 million in 4 days
The initial weekend showings of “Captain America: Brave New World” at cinemas have surpassed expectations, despite the generally mild reviews it’s received so far…and that’s a positive sign. Specifically, its domestic box office performance has exceeded previous predictions.
Before the release of the movie on Valentine’s Day, industry professionals didn’t anticipate that it would achieve the box office success of its previous sequel, Captain America: Civil War. Initially, experts believed that the film featuring Anthony Mackie as Captain America would earn around $80 million, but after Super Bowl predictions, this was revised to $86 million. In its first two days of ticket pre-sales, the movie outperformed the sales of previous Marvel franchise disappointments like The Marvels by approximately 40%. It matched the earnings of films such as Eternals, Black Widow, and Dune: Part Two.
Captain America: Brave New World Opened With $88 MIllion In North America and $92 Million Internationally
It’s Still Below Civil War and The Winter Soldier, Though
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but share some exciting news about “Captain America: Brave New World”! Over its first three days in North America, this blockbuster brought in an impressive $88 million. The numbers break down as follows: $12 million from Thursday previews, $28 million on Friday, and a strong weekend total of $56.5 million (split between $27.5 million on Saturday and $21 million on Sunday).
However, overseas, it fell slightly short of expectations with a five-day take of $92.4 million in over 53 markets. Still, that’s nothing to scoff at! So, grab your popcorn, folks, and let’s enjoy the ride!
In terms of home debuts for Captain America films, “Captain America: The First Avenger” made $65.1 million in 2011, followed by the Russo brothers’ sequel, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” which earned $95 million in 2014. Three years later, “Captain America: Civil War” surpassed the combined earnings of its predecessors with a staggering $179.1 million. Among February releases, it ranks fourth all-time, trailing only “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ($106.1 million), “Deadpool” ($132 million), and “Black Panther” ($202 million).
Despite receiving mixed reviews, with a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- grade from CinemaScore, as well as negative word-of-mouth, the box office performance of Captain America: Brave New World has exceeded expectations. If Kevin Feige and Disney executives had initially been concerned about the film’s reception, those worries may be alleviated soon. Given that President’s Day is still ongoing, experts are forecasting that the movie’s four-day opening will reach $100 million, making it the first to do so in 2025. However, its poorer performance overseas, particularly in the Chinese market – the largest overseas market – with only $10.6 million earned, is a cause for concern.
As a follower, I can breathe a sigh of relief alongside Anthony Mackie, Harrison Ford, Julius Onah, and Feige. With only the minor challenge of “Paddington in Peru” on our horizon, it seems that the second weekend for “Captain America: Brave New World” won’t be catastrophic. A global opening of $192 million (including Monday figures) against a reported budget of $180 million and a break-even point estimated at around $425 million – as per Deadline – hints that the stars might have finally started to align favorably for “Captain America: Brave New World.
