Konami is bringing back Castlevania with a new game planned for release in 2026! This will be the first major Castlevania title in over ten years, and was announced during Sony’s State of Play presentation, along with other exciting news from the company.
In 2026, the iconic video game series Castlevania will celebrate its 40th anniversary, having first launched in September 1986. Over nearly 20 main games, plus numerous spin-offs and remakes, Castlevania has become a long-standing and highly respected franchise. Games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night were particularly influential, helping to shape a popular style of gaming. Although there haven’t been many new Castlevania games recently, the series has stayed in the public eye thanks to the successful Castlevania anime on Netflix and its follow-up, Castlevania: Nocturne.
Castlevania Makes Its Return With A New, Controversial Look
Konami is bringing back the classic vampire-hunting Belmont family with a new Castlevania game, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse, planned for release in 2026. The game continues the story 23 years after Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse and features the return of the popular hero, Trevor Belmont. The gameplay will be similar to previous Castlevania titles, offering a side-scrolling, exploration-focused experience. However, the game boasts a fresh visual style, reminiscent of the indie hit Dead Cells. This is thanks to a collaboration between Konami, Dead Cells developer Motion Twin, and Rogue Prince of Persia creator Evil Empire. Fans may remember the critically praised Dead Cells DLC that brought the worlds of Castlevania and Dead Cells together, paving the way for this exciting new partnership.

It’s been years since a brand new Castlevania game was released, with the last original title, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, coming out in 2014. The Lords of Shadow games were a departure for the series, bringing it into 3D with a focus on action rather than the exploration that fans traditionally enjoyed. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 received mixed reviews, and its unexpected story choices proved divisive among longtime players.
While some players might not immediately love the new art style in Belmont’s Curse, it definitely feels like a good fit for the Castlevania universe. The first trailer shows gameplay that seems to be a return to the series’ popular Metroidvania style – exploring a large, interconnected world and fighting enemies. Though Castlevania started as a more basic platformer, its most celebrated games are known for this Metroidvania approach. This latest installment has a bright, energetic look that makes the gameplay feel even more action-packed and different from previous titles. It’s clear the game shares similarities with Dead Cells, but since Dead Cells is a highly praised indie game, that’s actually a positive thing.
The classic Castlevania games still look and feel amazing, even with all the advancements in graphics. Titles like Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow remain beautiful. While it would be great to see a new Castlevania game that recaptures that classic style, the series is also exploring a fresh look that could bring it back into the spotlight. Given the current popularity of the Metroidvania genre – a style Castlevania helped create – Belmont’s Curse arrives at an ideal moment to keep the franchise relevant and leading the way.
