For those eagerly anticipating additional Castlevania universe characters in Castlevania: Nocturne‘s second season, they might find themselves let down. Unlike expanding the cast, the show focuses on further developing characters from the previous season. The narrative primarily revolves around Richter and his team enhancing their abilities in different ways to potentially confront Erzsebet and break her grip on the sun.
In the second season of “Castlevania: Nocturne”, there are numerous emotional high points for the characters, causing them to make significant decisions and undergo transformations. But, will these changes persist over time? Let’s delve deeper into this topic while keeping spoilers in mind.
7. Richter/Annette
Love Blossoms Amidst Depression
In discussing Richter and Annette, it’s challenging to focus on one without the other, as their stories are deeply connected. Initially, both characters had flaws during the first season, but by the end, they managed to correct those faults. They were formidable allies, and in the second season, an unexpected turn of events saw them develop feelings for each other. The tension between them, reminiscent of a classic romantic sitcom trope, gradually intensified until it became evident that their relationship was blossoming by episode five. However, viewers rooting for Maria and Richter’s romance might feel let down when they witness Richter and Annette sail away together at the end of season two.
6. Edouard
The Singer Uncovers His Eyes
In the first season, it was arranged that Edouard would join the resistance, but he was apprehended and perished prematurely. This tragic incident casts a long shadow over Annette throughout the series, particularly when she learns about his bleak fate following his transformation into a monstrous being. Unlike other creatures created by magic, Edouard manages to keep his memories and human qualities, albeit in a puzzled state.
In the first season, he shields his eyes, symbolizing both a physical and emotional retreat from the world. In contrast, by the second season, Edouard grows accustomed to his monstrous form and opens his eyes, suggesting self-acceptance. Remarkably, he even stands up against adversity, rejoining society with Richter and Annette aboard their ship at the season’s end.
5. Tera
A Looming Vampire Threat
In the first season, Tera serves as a steady source of rationality and optimism. She’s the one who unites the combatants, all of whom make their ultimate sacrifice in the finale. In the season one climax, she sacrifices herself for Maria, transforming into a vampire. However, the second season doesn’t delve too deeply into Tera’s experiences as a vampire, despite the potential that such a plotline offers. Tera isn’t strictly evil, as she tries to console Maria and inadvertently passes on a hint of darkness to her. Rather than being a vibrant, energetic mother figure, Tera becomes somber and disoriented, struggling to adapt to her new vampire form.
4. Maria
A Step Toward The Dark
In episode four of season two, Maria’s transformation stands out as one of the more impactful episodes. While she seemed resentful and obstinate in the first season, her thirst for retribution intensifies significantly in the second. This escalation culminates in Maria murdering her father, The Abbot, by summoning a dragon to incinerate him alive. The intensity in Maria’s gaze suggests that the darkness within her hasn’t entirely been vanquished, even after she restores her summoning powers to the light. There’s also an undercurrent of sadness and envy as she grapples with her complex feelings towards her mother and Annette, who seems to be taking Maria’s adopted brother Richter away from her.
3. Juste
The Magic Flows Once More
It’s fortunate that not every character development in season two is gloomy, as Juste’s transformation is among the more favorable ones. Similar to Trevor Belmont in the initial season of the original Castlevania anime, Juste was rather reserved during season one of Castlevania: Nocturne. After losing loved ones, he turned into a recluse and ceased fighting evil for others’ sake. However, even by the end of season one, Juste remains a recluse but eventually breaks free from his melancholy and teams up with Richter in the battle against Erzsebet in season two. Remarkably, Juste survives despite engaging in numerous fights at his advanced age.
2. Drolta
A Servant No Longer
In the second season, Drolta undergoes significant transformations. To begin with, she perishes at the concluding moment of season one; however, in the premiere episode of season two, her character experiences a metamorphosis as The Abbot’s alchemy converts her from a vampire into a demon. Now more powerful than ever, she possesses a form that even allows her to endure sunlight.
In a literal sense, she alters her character drastically, even going so far as to betray her mistress, Erzsebet. This action isn’t just a surface change; it’s deeply emotional and significant because she feels that Erzsebet is unfit to continue the goddess Sekhmet’s legacy. This move could have positioned Drolta as a powerful figure in season three, but Richter puts an end to that possibility with a swift and decisive action. Let’s hope that this means Drolta is gone for good now.
1. Olrox
The Dragon Bides His Time
Olrox is portrayed as a villain with a complex heart. In the first season, he fatally wounds Richter’s mother but spares Richter for reasons that remain unclear. He aligns himself with Erzsebet’s legions in France, yet fails to contribute significantly to her cause despite his confidence in belonging to her order. Similar to Tera, Olrox is grappling with his purpose in season two, uncertain about his next steps. His predicament stems from his love for a human named Mizrak, who does not reciprocate due to Olrox’s loyalty towards Erzsebet. By the end of the series, driven by love, Olrox makes amends by assisting Richter in defeating Drolta and reviving Mizrak, who is gravely wounded during the final battle, turning him into a vampire as well. In essence, Olrox conquers his heart to do good.
