The studio has recently faced more layoffs after a challenging period that began with cuts in 2025, affecting as many as 75 employees at Eidos Montreal. Like the previous layoffs, these changes are being attributed to evolving project requirements. Eidos Montreal was purchased by Embracer Group in 2022 as part of a larger acquisition of several studios from Square Enix. Since then, Embracer has been reorganizing, and these repeated rounds of layoffs over three years indicate the restructuring is still affecting the studio.
So, back in Fall 2025, I started hearing whispers about a new Lord of the Rings game. Apparently, someone inside the industry said Embracer Group was working on something huge, like their attempt to make a LOTR game as massive and popular as Hogwarts Legacy.
