The game was very well-received by critics, earning an average score of 82 on OpenCritic and a recommendation from 86% of reviewers. It also won several awards, including Best Indie and Best Debut Indie at The Game Awards 2021.
In 2026, the iconic video game series Castlevania will celebrate its 40th anniversary, having first launched in September 1986. Over nearly 20 main games, plus numerous spin-offs and remakes, Castlevania has become a long-standing and highly respected franchise. Games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night were particularly influential, helping to shape a popular style of gaming. Although there haven’t been many new Castlevania games recently, the series has stayed in the public eye thanks to the successful Castlevania anime on Netflix and its follow-up, Castlevania: Nocturne.

It began in 1996 with Blood Omen, which introduced players to Kain, a nobleman transformed into a vampire and sent on a journey across the world of Nosgoth. Soul Reaver 1 and 2 followed in 1999 and 2001, focusing on Raziel, a wraith seeking vengeance against Kain. Kain returned as the main character in Blood Omen 2 (2002), but the series reached its peak with Legacy of Kain: Defiance in 2003. Defiance, a PlayStation 2 game, uniquely let players control both Kain and Raziel as their conflict reached a dramatic conclusion. Now, more than twenty years later, this beloved dark fantasy series is getting a modern update with a remaster for the PlayStation 5.
