Many gamers remember that 2011 wasn’t the last time Skyrim appeared in stores. Over the years after its release, Bethesda re-released the popular fantasy RPG multiple times, usually with new features or improvements. However, these were always fundamentally the same Skyrim game. This constant re-releasing eventually became a running joke, with fans confused by Bethesda’s continued focus on Skyrim, especially when it seemed to be slowing down work on other games.

The PlayStation 5 version of Avowed, along with a special anniversary update, was revealed at the first New Game Plus Showcase. Avowed was initially launched as a console exclusive for Xbox in February 2025, but will now also be available on PlayStation 5, similar to games like Forza Horizon 5 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

We’re really good at this kind of thing,” Berg explains, pointing to their experience with games like Wolfenstein and Gears of War. “We’re aiming to be more creative and try new things beyond just first-person shooters, and it’s important to us that the violence in this game is enjoyable—something players can have fun with and even laugh at. We’re not trying to make something grim or serious; that’s just not our style or how we approach storytelling.”

The console update released today, version 1.016 (or 1.016.000), is the same as the version 1.2 patch that PC players received earlier.

The game will be available on PS5 on February 17, 2026, one year after its original release. You’ll be able to pre-order it on the PlayStation Store soon.

The game Avowed was first released on February 18, 2025, for Xbox Series and PC. It’s available through the Microsoft Store, Steam, and Battle.net.

It’s not just about playing the game, either – people are really connecting with the story and creating all sorts of awesome fan content, especially fanfiction. In fact, it was one of the most popular things on Archive of Our Own last year, which is incredible!

Okay, so everyone’s still waiting for Elder Scrolls 6, and honestly, leaks are saying we’re looking at 2028 – that’s ages away! If I need my open-world RPG fix now, I’m gonna have to look elsewhere. I’m thinking some MMORPGs or classic fantasy RPGs could scratch that itch, even if they aren’t exactly the same. And hey, revisiting some of the older Elder Scrolls games might be a good idea too, especially if they’re free to play!

He told Game Informer that the term ‘Soulslike’ came about because FromSoftware simply recognized what players wanted. While often credited with creating the genre, he explained that the idea of challenging gameplay with death and learning as central mechanics was already desired by gamers. He believes there just hadn’t been a game that fully satisfied that desire yet.
