Catly Developers Deny AI And NFT Allegations

Summary

  • Many assumptions have been made that the Catly trailer was created using artificial intelligence.
  • Additionally, many believe the project to be based on NFT blockchain technology.
  • Although many fans remain skeptical, the developers refute these claims and attempt to preserve their innocence.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I have seen the evolution of gaming from its humble beginnings to the tech-driven juggernaut it is today. The trailer for Catly at this year’s Game Awards left me scratching my head and raising my eyebrows, as the red flags seemed to wave fiercely in the wind.

At the 2024 Game Awards, amongst thrilling revelations and Nvidia promotions, a game titled “Catly” sparked AI-related suspicions. Despite the trailer appearing ordinary, certain visuals seemed eerily similar to an NFT marketplace.

Over the past few years, there has been a bumpy ride when it comes to AI and NFTs in gaming, with these trends showing signs of slowing down significantly. The primary objective behind this development was primarily aimed at targeting the top 1% of gamers who frequently spend large sums on microtransactions. Given this fact, it’s hardly surprising that many people remain skeptical about games like Catly.

But still, when watching the trailer and knowing what type of games NFT profiteers tend to lean towards, the red flags slowly become neon red. A game where you dress up and collect various colorful, fluffy, realistic cats is calling for a developer to begin implementing a blockchain.

On the contrary, the Catly team maintains their innocence regarding the accusations about AI in their trailer. Their spokespeople have been insisting to outlets like PCGamer that no artificial intelligence was involved, and they’ve gone a step further by stating categorically that neither blockchain nor NFTs are part of the game either.

As a gamer, I believe it’s crucial to give everyone the benefit of the doubt until the facts are clear. While we’re always ready to call out wrongdoers, it’s unfair and potentially damaging to immediately point fingers at a company when the allegations against them haven’t been proven yet.

As reported by PCGamer, when they contacted a representative from the game Catly, they were informed that there is absolutely no blockchain technology used in Catly and no Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) either. Interestingly, much of the trailer seems to have been handcrafted, with animations and textures suggesting human creation.

Indeed, it becomes significantly harder to justify them when we scrutinize promotional materials or text that seem to trigger our innate suspicion toward AI. For example, merely glancing at this image brings to mind the latest Google Gemini commercial, which showcases the numerous artistic photos possible with AI tools.

While it’s generally agreed that the trailer showcases a blend of handcrafting, human animation, and CGI, there’s ongoing discussion about whether the game incorporates NFTs or Blockchain technology. Regardless of the developers’ initial stance as presumed innocent, certain assertions persist in causing controversy.

In the discussion above, several significant warning signs have been overlooked. One key point is that there’s talk of developers being linked to NFT and Blockchain initiatives prior to this project. This same concern was raised in other controversial NFT projects, where you can trace connections back to the developers’ previous work.

It seems that certain other ventures, including the game titled Alien Meow, are suspected to be owned by the same entity responsible for Catly. Yet again, no one from Catly has explicitly verified or refuted such speculations.

The situation seems suspiciously like an elaborate scheme involving NFTs, blockchain, and AI, where the overwhelming evidence against authenticity, scant substantiated claims, and our collective intuition based on visual inspection all point to the possibility that the Game Awards have fallen victim to this digital trickery.

At a minimum, if they eventually launch an AI-powered, cryptocurrency-based game, there’s no doubt that any audience would be instantly captivated by it or ignore it altogether. If by chance, this turns out to be the much-anticipated cat-collecting game we’ve all been dreaming of, then kudos to Catly for successfully incorporating AI and NFT elements into the game.

We’re eagerly waiting for someone to provide conclusive evidence either disproving wrongdoing or upholding innocence. For now, it seems that some of Catly’s statements might be misleading, serving as a shield to safeguard their achievements and hiding their vulnerability, much like a cat tucking its tail between its legs.
