CD Projekt, the company behind The Witcher, has sold GOG, its PC gaming marketplace, back to its co-founder, Michal Kicinski. This means CD Projekt no longer owns the DRM-free storefront it created in 2008. GOG has become a well-known platform for gamers to buy games without restrictive DRM, and has expanded over the last fifteen years to include popular titles like Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Tomb Raider series, among many others.
GOG has been focusing heavily on keeping classic games alive, working to ensure older titles still run on today’s computers. Late in 2024, they started the GOG Preservation Program to restore and re-release these games. This program has already brought back favorites like the original Resident Evil trilogy and Alpha Protocol, among many others. Now, CD Projekt is selling GOG to one of the people who originally created the platform.
CD Projekt Sells GOG Back to its Original Co-Founder
CD Projekt has sold GOG, the digital game distribution platform, back to its original co-founder, Michal Kicinski, for around $25.2 million. The company explained that this sale will allow them to concentrate fully on developing video games, specifically high-quality RPGs. GOG will continue to operate as its own entity under Kicinski’s leadership, and CD Projekt has already agreed to release its future games on the platform. Kicinski expressed his appreciation for CD Projekt and fellow co-founder Marcin Iwinski, emphasizing their shared belief that players should truly own the games they buy.
CD Projekt CEO Michael Nowakowski also spoke highly of GOG’s co-founder. He thanked the GOG team for their many years of partnership with CD Projekt in running the platform. Nowakowski framed the change in ownership as a simple farewell, and promised that all future CD Projekt games, including the upcoming Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2, will still be available on GOG. GOG’s leadership also assured fans that the change isn’t related to financial problems, noting that 2025 was a positive year for the platform.
CD Projekt Has Big Game Projects in the Works
By selling GOG, CD Projekt can now fully concentrate on developing its upcoming games. At the 2024 Game Awards, they revealed a first look at The Witcher 4, which will star Ciri, Geralt’s adopted daughter. The new Witcher game will emphasize player choice and is planned as the beginning of a new trilogy. CD Projekt is also creating a separate multiplayer game set in the world of The Witcher.

CD Projekt Red also announced they’re remaking the very first Witcher game, and Fool’s Theory is helping with development. Plus, CD Projekt is selling GOG, which means they can really focus all their energy on making even better games, and it’s going back to one of the people who originally created it – it’s a win-win!
