  • Rare Candy may shift the Basic Pokemon Ex meta by allowing Stage 2 cards to shine.

In five short days, I’ll be diving into the world of Alola with the Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Celestial Guardians set! This new expansion is chock-full of Alolan critters and special events to celebrate the mobile game’s six-month anniversary. While details about Celestial Guardians are still scarce, the teaser trailer gave us a sneak peek at plenty of Pokemon and Supporter cards themed around Sun and Moon characters.

I can hardly wait for the release of Alolan Raichu Ex in Celestial Guardians – it’s bound to shake up the meta! But there’s one more card that might do just as much, if not more: a game-changer that could potentially make or break other Ex cards.

As a dedicated gamer, I rarely come across dependable decks in the world of Pokémon TCG Pocket that steer clear of Ex cards entirely, mainly because these Ex cards tend to boast extraordinary power compared to regular Pokémons, all while boasting high HP (Health Points) which makes them tough to knock out. This is especially true for Stage 2 Ex Pokémon, who often sport the highest HP in the game and sometimes possess some of the best attacks as well – take Charizard Ex from Genetic Apex, for instance.

However, playing consistent rounds with Stage 2 Pokemon cards can be quite a challenge. That’s where the Rare Candy card from Celestial Guardians becomes an indispensable tool. It allows me to progress my basic Pokémon straight to their Stage 2 form, making it easier for me to include these powerful Ex Pokémons in my deck without compromising consistency.

Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Rare Candy Can Reshape The Ex Meta

In the Pokemon TCG Pocket, having a Rare Candy isn’t a matter of if but rather when, as this item is a consistent feature in both the video game franchise and its physical trading card game version. However, using Rare Candy can be challenging due to its ability to bypass one evolutionary stage, making it difficult to balance from both a gameplay and deck-building perspective. In the context of Celestial Guardians, Rare Candy allows you to instantly evolve a Basic Pokemon into its Stage 2 form, but only if it hasn’t been played that turn and it’s not the first turn of the game.

This tool proves particularly beneficial for decks incorporating Stage 2 Pokémon cards, except for special cases like Magnezone that require its Stage 1, Magneton, to generate Energy for attacking. More crucially, this tool is a game-changer for non-Basic Ex cards, which are currently challenging to manage consistently in a deck. While there are assisting cards such as Professor’s Research, Pokémon Communication, and Iono from the Pokémon TCG Pocket, it can still be difficult to execute effectively.

With the introduction of Rare Candy, players can now freely evolve their Stage 1 Pokémon into Stage 2, bypassing the randomness (RNG) associated with it. This addition allows for multiple copies of Rare Candy in a deck, thereby increasing the chances of summoning desired Stage 1 creatures or those that leapfrog directly to Stage 2. This immediate evolution significantly speeds up gameplay for many cards. Previously lesser-used Stage 2 EX Pokémon may now see play due to Rare Candy, and established ones could potentially become more reliable in decks.

Why Basic Pokemon Ex Cards May No Longer Be The Best in Pokemon TCG Pocket

In simpler terms, the common strategy used in Pokemon EX games (meta) could see significant changes because many players chose these Pokemon due to their accessibility. For instance, Articuno EX decks function based on a rule that every starting hand in the Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket edition must contain a Basic Pokemon card. This allows for two copies of Articuno EX and 18 Trainer cards to be used. However, these decks will continue to exist and potentially perform well. The game-changer could be the Rare Candy card, which might finally provide Stage 2 cards with the attention they deserve.
