In a different choice of words, it can be said that after the demise of Chadwick Boseman, who played Black Panther in Marvel Studios, they chose not to replace him with another actor. However, according to recent speculation, Marvel Studios might be rethinking this decision. Yet, some insiders argue this rumor may be misleading.
The film titled Black Panther saw an extraordinary box office triumph and exceptional critical praise that was unparalleled among Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. This recognition continued throughout the awards season, reaching a pinnacle with a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. A sequel was initiated promptly, but regrettably lead actor Boseman lost his life after battling cancer privately while Coogler was still scripting the sequel. Marvel Studios chose not to recast Black Panther as a mark of respect for Boseman, a decision that drew agreement from some but sparked debate among others who felt a reconsideration could have been in order.
Will Marvel Studios recast Black Panther?
Currently, Jeff Sneider shares that Marvel Studios might consider replacing Black Panther/T’Challa with a new actor. As Robert Downey Jr. is set to portray Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, there’s an opportunity for a fresh face to take on the role of Black Panther through the convenience of multiverse storytelling. It was said that an actor was once offered the Black Panther part in autumn, but they declined due to concerns about potentially damaging their career trajectory by following in Chadwick Boseman’s footsteps.
Following Sneider’s announcement that Black Panther might be recast, popular leaker MyTimeToShineHello countered by stating that Marvel Studios was not replacing Boseman’s T’Challa, but rather casting an older version of T’Challa and Nakia’s son, Toussaint. Fans learned from ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ that this character had been secretly raised by Nakia in the mid-credits scene. Twitter user Adam Siennica suggested that perhaps Sneider misunderstood due to the similar names of Boseman’s T’Challa and his son, a theory MyTimetoShineHello agreed with. When Twitter user Mon Ark pointed out that there would need to be a substantial time leap in the MCU for Marvel Studios to cast an older Toussaint/T’Challa since the character was only 6 in ‘Wakanda Forever’, MyTimeToShineHello replied that they would “advance his age.
In various online forums like Twitter and Reddit, fans show a divided response towards the decision to recast Black Panther. While some seem accepting of the change in light of the upcoming film, others believe that this should have been done before “Wakanda Forever” as they felt it would have been disrespectful to replace Boseman so soon after his passing. Some argue that the character was so influential that a new actor should step into the role, much like how multiple actors have portrayed Superman since Christopher Reeve, yet still hold him in high regard. Even Boseman’s brother suggests that the late actor would approve of Black Panther being recast.
It’s not unexpected that Marvel Studios might consider using the Multiverse concept to recast Black Panther following the significant success of the first film but slightly lower earnings of its sequel, ‘Wakanda Forever’. With a global box office take of $859 million, while the initial release grossed over $1 billion, it’s clear Marvel was aiming for another blockbuster. However, given Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing, we can only speculate if ‘Wakanda Forever’ would have reached that milestone again. With T’Challa out of the picture, the Black Panther mantle is up for grabs. Shuri took over in ‘Wakanda Forever’, but actress Letitia Wright has stirred controversy due to her sharing of anti-vax and transphobic content on social media. Wright has since apologized for her actions. With these events, Marvel Studios may be planning to cast a new Black Panther, and the chosen actor will undoubtedly have large shoes to fill.
Black Panther is available on Disney Plus.
