Summary

  • Death Devil orchestrated events to prevent Nostradamus prophecy; true intentions remain elusive.

  • Devils struggle with identity recall; relationships and alliances remain complex.

Ever since Nostradamus’ Prophecy was unveiled, The Grim Reaper has been a source of apprehension. As fear sweeps across the planet, potentially leading to the demise of humanity, both humans and these spectral beings are united in their efforts to avert this disastrous outcome.

In Chapter 195 of Chainsaw Man, it was believed that the Death Devil would appear, plunging the characters into equally dire circumstances. Yet, it turned out that the actual Death Devi had been disguising herself under a different name, masterminding various plots unbeknownst to us, casting doubt on all her previous intentions.

The Death Devil Finally Made Her Appearance

A Shocking New Revelation

In Chapter 195, it became widely speculated that the long-awaited arrival of the Death Devil, a crucial figure among the Four Horsemen, had taken place. Her distinctive twin eyes suggested her possible return, hinting at a reincarnation. The Death Devils’ emergence on Earth was rumored to signal the end of mankind, an event that the Public Safety Commission were working diligently to thwart.

In Chapter 195, it was thought that the latest transfer student, upon arrival, suspected the Death Devil due to their shared distinctive eyes with the Four Horsemen. Yet, her words often seemed puzzling. Given her supposed identity as the Death Devil, it was peculiar for her to claim she had come to “rescue” the students. However, much like other Horsemen, this could be explained by an unusual quirk in her character. Furthermore, her persistent and consistent tears at the thought of student hardships also lends credence to this theory.

In much the same way as other Horsemen demonstrated strong characteristics, the so-called “Death Devil” chose not to help the student with disposing of trash, considering it a squandering of her “exceptional abilities.” Moreover, her frequent discussions about saving humans through death led many to believe that the latest Fourth Horseman was indeed the Death Devil. However, this assumption is off the mark as she eventually unveils her true persona.

In their meeting with the phony Chainsaw Man, it turned out that the “Death Devil” was actually the Famine Devil, better known as Fami. This surprising discovery contradicted the previous revelation in Chapter 113 about the Famine Devil. It shows that while the Four Horsemen can recognize one another, they are unable to distinguish between their individual sisters. Nayuta’s conversation with Yoru and the supposed “Famine Devil” corroborates this idea.

I’m War Devil’s big sister… Famine Devil. Call me Fami.

Throughout these conversations, Nayuta could pick up a familiar scent from her siblings, but she couldn’t tell them apart, often addressing the “Famine Devil” as “Sis” rather than by name. In this chapter, it’s clear that she was still unaware of Asa’s true identity, calling her “that girl.” It isn’t until Chapter 198 that we learn that “Fami,” who Nayuta has been interacting with, is actually the Death Devil and has been using an alias. This revelation raises several questions about the Death Devil’s hidden intentions.

Previously discussed is the entity known as the Death Devil, which is connected to the upcoming Nostradamus Prophecy. In this foretelling, around the seventh month of 1999, “a fearsome Ruler of Terror will arrive,” marking the end for mankind. In the Chapter 131, the Death Devil (then referred to as Fami) expresses that the Nostradamus prophecy is becoming a reality; she regrets this outcome because her beloved foods will cease to exist.

As a food enthusiast, I couldn’t help but believe her when she frequently ordered a plethora of dishes, showing her genuine love for cuisine and her hunger. But now that her secret has been unveiled, I wonder about her hidden motives.

In the world of this story, when the Death Devil first meets Yoshida, she explains that an initial fear, called the Falling Devil, will signal the beginning of the prophecy’s revelation. Soon after, the Death Devil orders the Falling Devil to deprive Yoru of food, aiming to assert control over her. I initially dismissed this as Death simply manipulating Yoru to prevent the prophecy; however, with Death now controlling the Falling Devil in Chapter 131, this may be the first hint at revealing her true identity.

It’s commonly known that Devils tend to struggle with remembering names and faces, a trait noticeable in Makima. This might be due to their continuous cycle of reincarnation between Earth and Hell, causing them to lose all memories from past lives upon death. If this is true, it could also explain why Devils can partially identify each other by scent. However, smell is not always reliable for accurate identification, as shown by Nayuta and Yoru, who were unable to recognize Death in her authentic form solely based on scent.

  • The Death Devil was responsible for the Eternity Devil trapping Asa and Denji, placing them in this predicament to force Asa to turn Denji into a weapon.
  • Death is also responsible for the Falling Devil’s appearance on Earth, demonstrating her seniority and attempting to enslave Yoru. Thus kickstarting the beginning of the prophecy.
  • Death also orchestrated the entire Chainsaw Man Church plan. However, the goal is to protect humanity, though she seems to hide her true intentions.

As we delve into the storyline, the character known as the Death Devil, who first appeared disguised as Fami, has shown little emotion so far and typically maintains a very enigmatic air with a mature persona. In previous installments, such as the Academy Saga, the Death Devil was responsible for several key events, including the Falling Devil, and masterminded the Church of Chainsaw Man.

I disposed of all my organs. But I still couldn’t die.

During the thrilling Church arc, I was on the edge of my seat as the church attempted to vanquish the Death Devil. But, here’s the twist – the Death Devil orchestrated everything behind the scenes, making her true motives a tantalizing mystery. The Church’s actions might have been a clever ploy to stir up more death and mayhem, but as Nayuta wisely notes, this fear will only amplify their power. Quite intriguing, isn’t it?

In Chapter 198, Fami implores the Grim Reaper, who appears to be more of a figure of power rather than an enemy intent on destroying humanity. Instead, it seems her purpose might be to guide or strengthen Denji and Yoru. However, when Fami begs for Death to die if she has any mercy for mankind, Death demonstrates her immortality by revealing her body, which is devoid of internal organs, emphasizing that she, being the personification of death, cannot die physically. This suggests that even if Death wanted to end her own life, she may be incapable due to her inherent nature as the embodiment of death itself.

Chainsaw Man is now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
