Characters Who Had Too Much Screentime In One Piece

Among One Piece fans, a frequent topic of discussion is which characters deserve more focus, but less often debated is the issue of characters who perhaps received too much attention. Although it’s delightful to encounter all the peculiar and captivating characters that Oda incorporates into the narrative, there are some instances where certain characters, for various reasons, seemed to linger longer than necessary.

It’s possible that some characters received too much focus in the story because they were not central to the overall plot or were overly annoying, overshadowing other characters who could have had more screen time. Upon reflection, these are the One Piece characters who seem to fit this description and might have been better served with less screen time.

Wapol

The Always-Hungry Tyrant Just Seems To Keep Popping Up Out Of Nowhere

First Appearance: Episode 79

In simpler terms, Wapol initially appeared to be an adequate antagonist during the Drum Island arc. Given his cowardly nature and poor fighting skills, it seemed unlikely he would survive beyond that storyline. However, surprisingly, he has reappeared multiple times since then and even emerged as a prominent figure on a global level post-Reverie.

Despite the other characters developing significantly since the timeskip, Wapol remains arrogant and self-centered just as he was before. Notably, he continues to devour anything that catches his attention, which doesn’t make him an engaging character to follow. Even though brief appearances could have provided some entertaining scenes, it seems Oda is dedicating more focus on Wapol than many readers might prefer.

Foxy

Foxy And His Rag-Tag Crew Get An Entire Arc Based Around Them

First Appearance: Episode 207

In this narrative, I stumbled upon an intriguingly peculiar segment – the Long Ring Long Land arc. Upon landing on the island, the Straw Hats were promptly extended an invitation to participate in a Davy Back Fight by a somewhat eccentric pirate captain named Foxy. Despite his boasts of immense power, Foxy paled in comparison to some of the formidable adversaries Luffy and his crew had previously confronted, such as Arlong and Crocodile, showcasing a striking contrast.

Due to his lack of menace as an adversary, having him serve as the primary antagonist for a significant portion of the story can feel rather tiresome for fans. However, this arc isn’t without its merits; it offers some exciting and noteworthy moments, particularly during Zoro and Sanji’s debates. Yet, Foxy, the central character, seems to receive undue focus, considering his minimal impact on the storyline given his insignificance.

Bellamy

Bellamy Should Have Learned His Lesson After Being One-Shot The First Time

First Appearance: Episode 146

Shortly after Captain Bellamy’s formal introduction on Jaya, he was swiftly knocked out by a single punch from Luffy due to his arrogant behavior and excessive talking. It was indeed fitting that he received his comeuppance, but it seemed many fans weren’t eager for his return in future episodes.

In simpler terms, it seemed a bit unexpected when Bellamy appeared in Dressrosa, especially since he was now serving under his idol, Doflamingo. During Luffy’s fight against Doflamingo, Bellamy played a significant role but ended up losing with just one punch and eventually betrayed by his new master. Since Dressrosa was already quite lengthy, some fans felt that Bellamy’s presence unnecessarily extended the story, and they were eager to get to the highly anticipated showdown between Luffy and Doflamingo that had been teased for a long time. So, in essence, some viewers might have preferred if Bellamy’s storyline was omitted from this part of the narrative.

Yamato

Yamato’s Inclusion In Wano Always Felt A Little Odd

First Appearance: Episode 972

Near the midpoint of the Wano saga, it becomes clear that the formidable pirate leader Kaido has a child named Yamato. Prior to this revelation, there were few hints suggesting Yamato’s existence, and some fans still question why they were introduced, as they don’t significantly contribute to the storyline, despite being closely connected to the primary antagonist.

Essentially, as youngsters, Yamato suffered cruelty at Kaido’s hands. However, inspired by Oden’s courage, they resolved to aid Luffy in defeating the merciless ruler of Wano forever. Although numerous chapters and episodes focus on Yamato’s emotional journey and their confrontation with Kaido, their decision not to join the Straw Hats leaves them appearing as an unexpected and somewhat extraneous character, contributing to a story arc that was already starting to feel overly prolonged.

Momonosuke

Momo Isn’t Exactly The Most Exciting Character To Follow

First Appearance: Episode 611

Given his impending role as the future Shogun of Wano, it’s understandable why Momonosuke would have significant screen time. However, due to him primarily displaying emotions like crying or spying on Nami and Robin, he hasn’t been fully developed as a character yet. Consequently, some of his scenes might benefit from being reduced, particularly once the gang arrives in Wano, to allow more focus on other characters.

During the Wano arc, the narrative frequently switches to focus on Momonosuke and his training, which can be jarring due to the presence of numerous overly powerful characters such as the Straw Hats. Watching a young boy wield a wooden sword among these mighty figures often disrupts the story’s pace. However, it is acknowledged that he eventually becomes significantly more crucial once he matures into an adult. For quite some time in the narrative, Momonosuke appears to be an annoying brat that many fans find hard to ignore.

Rebecca

Oda Went Above And Beyond To Try And Make Rebecca Relevant And Memorable

First Appearance: Episode 633

In comparison to other female characters like Vivi and Nami in the One Piece series, Rebecca isn’t often praised to the same extent by many fans. This is primarily because, although she’s not central to the storyline, she receives a significant amount of screen time during the Dressrosa arc, which some viewers find unnecessary.

As an observer, I notice that Kyros’ daughter, Rebecca, seems to share a deeply emotional bond with him. Yet, amidst the influx of fresh faces in Dressrosa, Rebecca fails to captivate or intrigue as notably as characters like Bartolomeo or even Sabo who have returned. Though fans were thrilled to welcome Vivi back for the Reverie, the excitement didn’t quite extend to Rebecca, whose frequent appearances in Dressrosa have unfortunately made her seem somewhat forgettable.

Caribou

Caribou Will Always Find A Way To Hog The Spotlight

First Appearance: Episode 519

In simpler terms, it’s quite surprising how often Caribou, initially a minor adversary introduced at Sabaody, reemerges in different story arcs to stir up trouble. Regardless of whether the Straw Hat pirates are battling a Yonko in Wano, or Blackbeard’s crew is causing mayhem elsewhere, Caribou always seems to show up, almost as if he’s been intentionally placed by Oda to offer timely assistance when the characters find themselves in dire situations. This could be seen as a kind of convenient plot device.

Although he may have a peculiar ability that makes him mobile and powerful – the transformation into a sludge-like substance through his Devil Fruit possession – this character is generally disliked due to his habit of tearing others down for personal gain, which has been evident on multiple occasions. His persistent presence in various situations has led many fans to express disgust and frustration with his continual appearances. However, it appears that his frequent appearances are unlikely to diminish anytime soon.
