Summary
- Lilith may have met her perfect end, so she may not return for Borderlands 4.
- BALEX’s story is complete in Borderlands 3, so he shouldn’t feature in Borderlands.
- Sir Hammerlock’s wedding in DLC concludes his story, negating a return to Borderlands.
2024’s Gamescom kickstarted with a blast as Gearbox Games unveiled an eagerly awaited revelation – the announcement of Borderlands 4. This marks the main series installment since 2019’s Borderlands 3, and gamers are buzzing in anticipation for Borderlands 4, set to launch in 2025. Since its debut, the Borderlands franchise has captivated players with its unique art style, quirky humor, and entertaining looter shooter gameplay.
As anticipation grows for Borderlands 4, it’s crucial to reflect on the memorable personalities the games have presented, such as the malevolent Handsome Jack and the lively Tiny Tina. Given the rich tapestry of characters in the Borderlands universe, players should recall the epic narratives these figures have contributed to. That being considered, some characters might have already experienced their ideal conclusion and may not feature in the fourth installment of the groundbreaking first-person shooter series.
1. Lilith
One Of The Six Sirens Who Got A Heroic End
- Lilith was last seen risking her life to save Pandora and Elpis
- Not yet confirmed to be alive or dead
Lilith debuted as a playable character in the initial installment of the series and has appeared in every subsequent game since, earning her a special place among numerous fans. In the game Borderlands 2, the quest to locate and ultimately lose her partner, Roland, serves as an emotional backbone for the storyline.
In the game “Borderlands 3”, Lilith rejoined the scene to offer missions for the Vault Hunters. After vanquishing Tyreen, she bravely put her life on the line by relinquishing her Siren powers to save Pandora and Elpis, although her future remains uncertain. This selfless act could mark the conclusion of Lilith’s character development, but given her widespread popularity in the “Borderlands” series, it seems unlikely that we won’t see more of Lilith in “Borderlands 4”.
2. BALEX
The Tediore AI NPC Got To Fulfill His Purpose In Borderlands 3
- BALEX got to fulfill the purpose he was made for in Borderlands 3
- Installed on a plush teddy, this AI was featured briefly but continued to broadcast announcements following his installation
In the thrilling mission “The Family Jewel” of Borderlands 3, I was first introduced to the charming character known as BALEX. His snappy comebacks and adorable plushie appearance left an indelible mark on the game. After GenIVIV seized control of The Family Jewel ship, it was BALEX who helped us regain command and recover a valuable vault key fragment.
After fulfilling its mission, BALEX is uploaded to The Family Jewel and restores the ship, wrapping up his narrative thread. Given his widespread appeal, this conclusion seems fitting and complete for BALEX; it would be best if he doesn’t reappear in Borderlands 4.
3. Athena
The Legendary Assassin And Retired Bounty Hunter
- Athena was a playable character in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
- Most recently appeared in Tales from the Borderlands coming out of her retirement from bounty-hunting
In the game Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Athena – once an assassin for the Crimson Lance and a bounty hunter – was introduced as a playable character. Following orders to eliminate her by Lilith’s associates, she was miraculously rescued from certain death by The Watcher instead.
After making a comeback in Tales from the Borderlands, I decided to hang up my bounty hunting boots, only to find myself drawn back into my old ways when Felix hired me for an unusual assignment – taking down both Fiona and Sasha. Yet, as the game unfolds based on player decisions, it turns out that I’m set to wed Janey. With this heartwarming ending in mind, I’d be more than content to settle down and enjoy a peaceful life, one not likely to be part of Borderlands 4.
4. Handsome Jack
The Big Bad Of The Franchise Had His Time In The Sun
- Handsome Jack was the iconic villain defeated in Borderlands 2
- Jack’s doppelganger Timothy Lawrence appeared in Borderlands 3
Jack, a character known for his good looks, established the standard for the Borderlands series as an unforgettable antagonist. Despite his wicked actions, he consistently saw himself as the main story’s hero. Numerous attempts on the lives of the Vault Hunters were made by him, but in the thrilling conclusion of Borderlands 2, he met his demise.
In essence, it’s worth noting that Jack, our protagonist, is famously associated with look-alikes such as Timothy Lawrence and even has the ability to produce clones. This might open up an opportunity for Gearbox Studios to reinstate Handsome Jack in a significant role within Borderlands 4. Nevertheless, after all the struggles to vanquish him, it would be disappointing if he made a comeback in Borderlands 4. Therefore, it would be beneficial for him not to reappear in this upcoming installment of the game.
5. Janey Springs
The Junk Dealer On Elpis Has A Potential Happy Ending
- First appeared in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
- Her marriage to Athena should offer an ending to Janey’s story
In the games “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel” and “Tales from the Borderlands”, Janey Springs assumes a secondary character role. She operates as a salvage dealer on Pandora’s satellite, Elpis. Throughout the narrative, Janey recruits the vault hunters to take down Deadlift and provides additional missions from her store in Concordia.
In the same vein as Athena, it might not be suitable for Janey Springs to reappear in Borderlands 4. Given that in Tales from the Borderlands, we learn about her marriage to Athena, it seems more fitting for her to continue her life off-screen unless their relationship or its complexities could significantly contribute to the narrative of Borderlands 4.
6. Sir Hammerlock
His Wedding To Wainwright Jakobs Provides A Perfect End To His Story
- Sir Hammerlock has been featured as an NPC in the Borderlands franchise
- The wedding of Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs was the conclusion of the Gun, Love, and Tentacles DLC
In the world of Borderlands, Sir Hammerlock stands out as a notable character, sporting a mechanical limb and shattered spectacles. Throughout the series, he offered numerous additional missions for players to complete, and was himself the main focus in the downloadable content titled “Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt.
In the add-on content titled “Gun, Love, and Tentacles” for “Borderlands 3“, players attend the wedding of Sir Hammerlock and Wainwright Jakobs, who’s inheriting the Jakobs Corporation. This wedding serves as a fitting conclusion to Sir Hammerlock’s storyline, implying that he may not reappear in “Borderlands 4“. While this decision might displease many fans fond of the daring and sophisticated explorer.
7. Krieg
The Playable Psycho Of Borderlands 2 Should Skip Borderlands 4
- Available as a playable character in Borderlands 2
- Last seen dealing with his psycho side of himself
In the thrilling world of Borderlands, I find Krieg to be an intriguing character, a once bounty hunter turned psycho, whose personality has been fractured into two distinct parts. One Krieg revels in chaos and violence, while the other Krieg, remarkably, exhibits a level of sanity that stands out among the psychos.
The version of Krieg that fans are familiar with may not come back, as seen during the DLC “Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck”. In this expansion, players delve into Krieg’s mind dealing with the loss of Maya, offering a resolution for his character, temporarily. If Krieg isn’t in Borderlands 4, it would intensify the emotional impact of the DLC on both the character and the players. This could pave the way for a revamped Krieg to reappear in another DLC.
