Characters Who Survived Death Moments in Final Fantasy Fans Can’t Explain

Summary

  • Cid Pollendina miraculously survives jumping from an airship with a bomb in Final Fantasy 4.
  • Joshua Rosfield cheats death twice in Final Fantasy 16, leaving fans questioning his survival.
  • Squall Leonhart survives being impaled and lost in space and time in Final Fantasy 8.

The “Final Fantasy” series is known for its collection of narrative-focused games, boasting a gallery of unforgettable characters. True to form, these protagonists often find themselves in life-threatening predicaments, with the odds of survival always hanging in the balance.

It can be surprising when some characters deliberately walk towards imminent danger, yet manage to live through it. Generally, these instances don’t diminish a player’s overall enjoyment of the Final Fantasy series, but they do occasionally prompt players to ponder and question certain events in the game.

1. Cid Pollendina

Jumped From An Airship With A Bomb, Yet Somehow Survived

In the game known as Final Fantasy 4, there is widespread recognition for its numerous enigmatic self-sacrifices that can be challenging to comprehend. This is particularly evident in Cid’s story, where he leaps from an airship while carrying a bomb with the intention of sealing a colossal fissure connecting our world above and the underworld beneath.

In an attempt to obstruct the enemy and protect Cecil, he performed a daring maneuver that seemed fatal. However, it was later discovered that he had somehow miraculously survived. This moment, though seemingly irrational within the game’s context, might not raise many eyebrows among players so engrossed in the game’s storyline at this juncture.

2. Joshua Rosfield

Cheated Death Twice

In the game Final Fantasy 16, Joshua stands out among other characters due to his extraordinary ability to defy death twice. The first instance occurs when Clive, in his Ifrit form, destroys Phoenix, yet surprisingly, it is later disclosed that Joshua had somehow survived this devastating encounter.

In the finale of the game, it appears as though Joshua makes a selfless move by seemingly giving up his life to empower Clive, enabling him to defeat Ultima. Yet, the prelude discloses that Joshua miraculously survived and documented this grand adventure in a story named “Final Fantasy”.

3. Rydia Of Mist

Got Dragged By Leviathan Into The Ocean But Didn’t Drown

Rydia is widely considered among the top characters from the “Final Fantasy” series. Her story begins under somber circumstances as her town gets destroyed, leading to the loss of her mother. This unfortunate event inadvertently prompts her to summon Titan with the aim of making Cecil and Kain accountable for it.

Eventually, Rydia becomes friendly with Cecil once any confusion is resolved, but then finds herself ensnared by Leviathan, getting pulled underwater. Instead of perishing at that moment, she found herself in the Feymarch, a place where her age advanced rapidly. Eventually, she became proficient in black magic and could summon the power of Eidolons whenever necessary.

After sorting out any misunderstandings with Cecil, Rydia ended up being captured by Leviathan (a sea monster) and got dragged underwater. Instead of dying there, she found herself in a magical forest called Feymarch where she aged quickly. She eventually mastered black magic and could summon powerful creatures known as Eidolons whenever needed.

4. Yuna

She Was Supposed To Die And Continue The Cycle Of Destruction Plaguing Spira

In the world of Final Fantasy, there’s another remarkable heroine named Yuna who has the power to single-handedly defeat bosses. This noble figure took on this role when she was chosen for the self-sacrificing mission to destroy Sin and save the world.

If Tidus hadn’t intervened at just the right moment, she would have met her fate. Instead, he motivated her and their entire group to challenge this ominous destiny. They engaged in a legendary battle against formidable enemies such as Yunalesca and Sin itself. After a grueling fight, they ultimately defeated Yu Yevon, thereby putting an end to the Sin threat for all time.

5. Cloud Strife

Has The Uncanny Ability To Survive Treacherous Falls

Even though Cloud boasts immense power, he’s still just as human as the rest of us. The sheer implausibility of him surviving the fall from such a staggering height into Aerith’s sanctuary is already stretching credulity, but then again, that’s Final Fantasy for you!

As a gamer, I can tell you that my character, Cloud, miraculously endures plummeting into the Lifestream not just once, but twice. In a strange twist of events, the second fall turned out to be advantageous for his well-being. It granted him the opportunity to untangle his memories and reverse the harm inflicted by Hojo’s experiments, as well as the mako poisoning that ensued.

6. Squall Leonhart

Survived Being Impaled And Becoming Lost In Space And Time

The majority of main characters in the “Final Fantasy” series are shielded by plot armor, but Squall stands out as pushing this protection a bit too much. For instance, Squall gets impaled by an ice spike from Edea, yet it’s later discovered that not only did he survive, but he also didn’t sustain any visible injuries from the ordeal.

Towards the conclusion of the game, Squall seems disoriented between dimensions when Ultimecia is vanquished. Despite the fact that he theoretically ought to have been stretched thin (spaghettified), he somehow returned to his original timeline following an unusual series of events.

7. Ignis Scientia

Despite Using The Ring Of The Lucii, Ignis Only Lost His Eyes Instead Of His Life

In the movie “Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy 15,” it is shown that only those from the Royal Bloodline can handle The Ring of the Lucii, as demonstrated by Nyx when he utilized its power and passed away soon after. Given this, when Ignis donned the ring to battle Ardyn in “Episode Ignis,” it would have been expected that he too would meet a similar end.

In my gaming world, I, Ignis, remained loyal to our king, Noctis, even when faced with the ultimate peril. Instead of succumbing to death, fate chose to take away my eyesight – a sacrifice that strengthened the bond between us. It was an intensely emotional experience for me as a character, but it felt like the game’s internal logic took a backseat during that moment.

8. Luneth, Arc, Refia, & Ingus

The Heroes Are Killed By The Cloud Of Darkness, But Are Revived Not Long After

In the annals of Final Fantasy, The Cloud of Darkness stands as one of the most formidable adversaries. Her ease with defeating the party following her unveiling is a testament to her strength. It seemed that the Warriors of Light had met their end, but fortunately for them, plot armor intervened, ensuring their survival against all odds.

Doga and Unei, two spiritual companions traveling with the group, departed following their role in bringing the heroes back to life. This momentous event provided the heroes with an essential opportunity to lessen the power of the Cloud of Darkness prior to another confrontation, one that would significantly impact the destiny of the world.
