Summary
- The villains in One Piece have selfish and harmful dreams, prioritizing themselves over others.
- Characters like Kaido, Crocodile, and Wapol demonstrate ruthless behaviors for personal gain.
- Luffy’s clashes with individuals who prioritize their own ambitions without regard for others.
People familiar with One Piece understand that despite the series’ cheerful exterior, it is inhabited by a variety of unsavory characters. Much like many villains and adversaries, these individuals often harbor pessimistic aspirations centered solely on themselves rather than utilizing their abilities to better the world at large.
At times, an individual might not fully grasp that their aspirations are essentially self-serving and potentially harmful to others, or they might consider the ultimate objective so crucial that they disregard the welfare and lives of others entirely in pursuit of it. Regardless, there’s one point that stands undeniable: Luffy would never find common ground with those who solely imagine personal gain at the cost of others, as demonstrated by these characters from One Piece.
Warning! Spoilers Ahead!
1. Kaido
The Mighty Yonko Terrorized An Entire Country To Create An Unstoppable Army
- Dream: Amass A Powerful Enough Army To Topple The World
Upon his arrival in Wano for the first time, the relentless pirate Kaido swiftly understood that this isolated nation offered an ideal base for his personal military force. Delighted by this discovery, Kaido not only showed no qualms about overrunning the populace and their settlements but went so far as to form an alliance with Orochi. Under his rule, he began contaminating the inhabitants using worthless Devil Fruits, or in certain instances, denying them food altogether.
As I watch events unfold, it gradually becomes evident that Kaido’s primary ambition, beyond claiming the title of Pirate King, is to assemble an unstoppable force capable of conquering the world, even the World Government itself. Though he often had his Beasts Pirates by his side in executing this scheme, Kaido has consistently demonstrated a chilling readiness to sacrifice them for the sake of his objectives. His cold-hearted abandonment of his own child during his quest for power serves as a stark reminder of the ruthless nature that lies beneath Kaido’s imposing exterior.
2. Crocodile
Acquiring An Ultimate Weapon Is All Crocodile Ever Wanted
- Dream: Overthrow King Cobra And Acquire Pluton
In their earlier battles, Luffy and the Straw Hats primarily encountered villains who had short-term objectives and relatively modest goals. However, everything shifted with Crocodile’s arrival in the narrative. Crocodile’s Operation Utopia was a grand scheme that aimed to depose the king of Alabasta, ultimately enabling him to seize control of the powerful weapon called Utopia.
It strongly appears that Crocodile intended to harness the destructive might of Pluton for conquest across numerous islands, transforming into an indomitable threat. To accomplish this task, he assembled a group of spies, and even orchestrated a civil war while posing as a savior to the people he ultimately aimed to deceive. However, during his time in Impel Down, Crocodile showed signs of softening. Yet, when he was based in Alabasta, his aspirations were notably self-serving.
3. Bellamy
Bellamy’s Obsession With Doflamingo Turned Him Into A Ruthless Pirate
- Dream: Earn The Favor Of Doflamingo / Be Number One
It’s not surprising that Doflamingo, who is as wicked as one can be, has a follower who shares his ruthless nature. When Luffy encounters Bellamy on Jaya during a brief stopover, it wasn’t immediately clear what his ultimate aim was, given he appeared to be just a common tough guy in Luffy’s eyes at the time.
In due course, it becomes clear that Bellamy had long admired Doflamingo and aimed to impress the Warlord by adopting his nihilistic demeanor. Regrettably, instead of being beneficial to Doflamingo, Bellamy transformed into a self-serving captain who sought personal gain and validation for his ego. Fortunately, Luffy managed to make Bellamy see reason, enabling him to acknowledge that the pirate’s life might not suit him after all.
4. Wapol
Wapol Ensured The People Of Drum Island Were Entirely Reliant On Him
- Dream: Rule Over People As A Tyrant
It’s truly astonishing how far Wapol is willing to push boundaries to realize his ambition of ruling tyrannically. On Drum Island, for instance, he devised a cunning plan to eliminate every medical professional on the island. This way, the entire population would be in dire need of him for their health. Unfortunately, when given the chance, Wapol was not an effective leader; instead, he either dozed off or consumed everything around him due to his peculiar Devil Fruit powers.
Despite his loss against the Straw Hats, Wapol determinedly set up another kingdom, christening it the Black Drum Kingdom of Evil, with the intent of reclaiming the title of King. His fixation on ruling by instilling fear has transformed him into a truly reprehensible and self-centered individual. It’s always incredibly gratifying to see someone give him a well-deserved slap.
5. Arlong
Arlong Wanted An Easy Life Where Humans Would Be His Servants
- Dream: Conquer The East Blue And Turn Humans Into Slaves
Throughout much of his life, Arlong harbored a profound animosity towards humans, yet he managed to maintain some semblance of restraint, following in the footsteps of Fisher Tiger who sought to abstain from needless violence against them. However, upon Fisher Tiger’s death at the hands of Marines, Arlong’s hidden hatred festered and grew, transforming him into a ruthless pirate with a singular ambition: to conquer the East Blue and enslave every last human under his rule.
Despite having a group of fishmen under his command, it was ultimately Arlong who held the reins, catering solely to his arrogant and biased self-image. Fortunately, Arlong’s reign didn’t last long due to his early capture by Luffy in the narrative. It’s a disturbing thought to envision him as ruler, seated on a golden throne with everyone else serving at his beck and call.
6. Judge
Judge Had No Quarrels Turning His Kids Into Monsters
- Dream: Create An Army Of Soldiers And Conquer The North Blue
It’s clear that the judge is unlikely to receive any Parent of the Year accolades in the near future, given his abysmal parenting skills depicted in “One Piece.” His plan to dominate the North Blue for the sake of rejuvenating the Germa Kingdom is indeed chilling. As a former scientist, Judge subjected his own children to genetic manipulations, aiming to eradicate their emotions and create a squad of ruthless soldiers.
Sanji managed to avoid the impact of these experiments, yet this exceptionality led Judge to imprison him in a cell, on the verge of starvation. This harsh treatment was due to the fact that Sanji is a genuine human, as Judge aimed to strip his children of ordinary lives. The cruelty of this ambition, striving to deprive others of normalcy, starkly illustrates how an obsessive dream can motivate someone to perform truly wicked acts.
7. Doflamingo
After The World Betrayed Him, Doflamingo Only Looks Out For Himself
- Dream: Destroy The World
In simpler terms, Doflamingo harbors deep hatred for the world and its inhabitants, a sentiment that seems justified given his past experiences. Born into the Celestial Dragon family, he was made to live among commoners, which eventually led to him and his family being accused of wrongdoing and nearly executed due to their noble status. In their hour of need, however, the other Celestial Dragons abandoned them, leaving a deep scar on Doflamingo’s heart. This traumatic experience shaped him into the ruthless sociopath he is today, as he comes to mistrust everyone and believes that the world itself should be annihilated.
It is clear that Doflamingo revels in his role as a ruthless and nihilistic antagonist, showing no remorse for any life taken, whether they were innocent or not. His destructive actions, which included demolishing the Celestial Dragons’ creations and unintentionally causing harm to bystanders, seemed to be his only source of pleasure. Thankfully, he is now imprisoned in Impel Down to prevent his twisted ambitions from coming true.
8. Orochi
Orochi Enjoyed Inflicting “Punishment” Onto The People Of Wano
- Dream: Punish The People Of Wano While Living In Luxury
In essence, although Kaido appeared as the top ruler of Wano, it was actually Orochi who held the true leadership position, as he continued to serve as the Shogun. As a young boy, Orochi harbored resentment over the perceived injustice of his grandfather’s execution, a feeling that persisted throughout his life. As Shogun, Orochi sought retribution against those he considered enemies, treating the people of Wano with contempt and causing the deaths of many, both as a means of vengeance and for his own entertainment.
So long as Kaido was with him, Orochi felt secure knowing that no one would dare challenge him, allowing him to indulge in his self-centered desires while the masses went hungry. Orochi is a truly detestable tyrant within this narrative, and his reign of terror can be traced back to his childhood traumas, which fueled his desire to torment an entire island for years on end.
