Sony is releasing a cheaper version of the PlayStation 5, but it will initially only be sold in Japan. While this new PS5 model has a few limitations, the lower price is expected to make it a hit with Japanese gamers.
Gaming can be a costly hobby, especially with the price of consoles and games. Despite this, people are still buying – the Nintendo Switch 2, for example, has seen incredible sales. However, high console prices can be a deterrent, making the current PlayStation 5 discount particularly appealing.
PlayStation 5 Gets a Cheaper Version, But Most Players Can’t Get One
A more affordable PlayStation 5 is coming to Japan! Revealed at the State of Play Japan event, this Digital Edition console has 825GB of storage and will be available starting November 21, 2025. It’s priced at 55,000 yen, which is around $355 USD – a significant savings compared to the $499 price tag for the standard Digital Edition PS5 in the United States. In fact, Japanese buyers will save about 29%, and the price is even lower than what the Digital Edition used to cost in the US before the recent price increase.
More and more players are switching from the PS4 to the PS5, and this shift could allow the PS5 to eventually surpass the PS4 in total sales. While the PS5 is doing very well, it’s currently slightly behind the PS4, which sold 86 million units in its first five years. The PS5 has reached 84.2 million units sold in the five years since its 2020 release. Despite already being Sony’s most profitable console generation so far, increased sales would always be beneficial.
Japanese gamers are probably thrilled about this new opportunity, but it’s frustrating for everyone else. Sony isn’t alone in doing this – Nintendo previously released the Switch 2 at a lower price in Japan than elsewhere. However, that launch had limitations; importing the system from Japan required understanding Japanese and having a Japanese online account. The same will likely be true for the new PS5. While discounts might appear during the holidays, consider a refurbished PS5. Sony currently offers a certified refurbished model with 825GB of storage for $399. Although pricier than the Japanese version, it includes the disc drive, which might be worth the extra cost for players who prefer owning physical games.
