Chikorita’s New Form Could Spell Disaster for Feraligatr and Emboar in Pokemon Legends: Z-A!

Summary

  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A promises action-packed battles and exploration, with leaks suggesting new Mega Evolutions.
  • The potential Grass/Fairy type for Meganium in Z-A could create challenges for Feraligatr and Emboar‘s secondary types.
  • A Fairy/Fighting/Steel trifecta for secondary types could be bad news for both Feraligatr and Emboar.

Waiting until late 2025 for a fresh mainline Pokemon game might displease some enthusiasts due to the longer-than-anticipated delay, but Pokemon Legends: Z-A appears to offer thrilling combat sequences, extensive exploration within Lumiose City, the comeback of Mega Evolutions, and more. Players have plenty to anticipate, as it seems that Pokemon Legends: Z-A could introduce an unforeseen Mega evolution for a first-generation Pokemon, according to rumors. At this point, it’s uncertain how the game will handle its starters, whether through new forms or Mega Evolutions; however, Chikorita might make life more challenging for another starter regardless.

As a devoted fan, I eagerly anticipate Pokemon Legends: Z-A, knowing full well the high expectations it faces following the challenges with Gen 9 games and the phenomenal reception of PLA‘s innovative gameplay style. To carve out its unique space, it appears to be aiming for a harmonious blend of these two gameworlds’ best aspects. The battles appear distinct and intriguing enough to pull this off, so the fate of the new Pokemon, forms, and Mega Evolutions rests heavily on their shoulders. If Chikorita’s Disarming Voice move in the trailer is any hint, it seems that the remaining starters could present an unusual portrait, for reasons apart from what we’re used to.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Starter Trio’s Type Combinations May Already Be Clear

In many contemporary main series Pokémon games, a frequent pattern is that the three starting Pokémons have a secondary type which can either boost their strength against certain attacks or make them vulnerable to others. For instance, in Generation 9, Meowscarada is both Grass and Dark, making it weak against Skeledirge’s Fire but strong against its Ghost-type. Similarly, Skeledirge is weak against Quaquaval’s Water, but remains unscathed by Fighting moves. This trend may hint at the secondary types for Feraligatr and Emboar if Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Meganium is indeed Grass/Fairy as Disarming Voice suggests.

To begin with, secondary types among starters can either lack a distinct pattern, like Gen 5’s Samurott, Serperior, and Emboar who had one type each, or they might aim to form a trio of sorts. In this scenario, if Meganium became Grass/Fairy, it would imply that the remaining creatures might include Fighting and Steel types. Since Emboar is already Fire/Fighting, another starter in this case could be Fire/Steel. Similarly, Feraligatr would need a secondary type of Fighting for the same reasons. This potential arrangement for Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s starter trio might pose a challenge in terms of standing out among other Pokémon.

In this scenario, Fairy, Fighting, and Steel form what can be considered a three-way combination, but it’s not a full trifecta since they don’t all have resistance to each other. The reason for this combination is that Fairy has an advantage over Fighting, which inflicts double damage on Steel, and Steel, in turn, is effective against Fairy.

Why Meganium Being Grass/Fairy Would Be Bad News For Feraligatr and Emboar

In the game Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the starter Gen 9 has a Water/Fighting type with Quaquaval, which may diminish the appeal of a potential new Feraligatr form due to their shared type. On the other hand, Emboar might not be as attractive in battles because it’s Fire/Steel and has a 4x weakness to Ground. It’s speculated that Meganium may not be Grass/Fairy or that its types won’t dictate the types of both Feraligatr and Emboar. Given that these type combinations are uncommon for starter trios, it seems reasonable to expect something new.

One possible alternative could be to assign a Dark-type Pokemon as one of the starters, making it vulnerable to Fairy attacks. However, this would be the third consecutive mainline game to follow this pattern, which makes it somewhat improbable. Another suggestion is to give Emboar the unique combination of Fire and Fairy types, but this seems unlikely given Chikorita’s moves and appearance. If Meganium eventually gets Fairy as its secondary type, it could pose problems for its fellow starters, potentially leading Game Freak to reconsider their approach when designing the next trio.
