Summary
- A Chrono Trigger remake may be in the works at Square Enix.
- Developer Yuji Horii allegedly mentioned the game during a Comic-Con panel.
- Fans should keep in mind that it’s possible this is all a misunderstanding.
There are rumors swirling that Square Enix could be developing a remake of the classic RPG, Chrono Trigger. This game is frequently hailed as one of the best role-playing games ever created, often making top lists in discussions about greatest games overall. Interestingly, despite its immense popularity, Chrono Trigger has not seen significant updates from Square Enix. While it has been ported to various platforms, it remains absent from modern gaming consoles.
2018 saw the PC port of the beloved game Chrono Trigger, but since then, it’s been lying low. Meanwhile, Square Enix has breathed new life into some of its iconic JRPGs by way of remasters and remakes. They’ve significantly updated the classic Dragon Quest series and old-school Final Fantasy titles. Many fans have been yearning for a similar treatment for Chrono Trigger, and now, there’s speculation that such a project might be in the works.
At a Comic-Con panel in Naples focused on Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest developer Yuji Horii, some attendees assert that Horii inadvertently revealed the upcoming remake of Chrono Trigger. The story goes that Horii accidentally disclosed a Chrono Trigger remake, prompting a whisper in his ear. According to Reddit user LawfulnessSure125 (who referenced a post on another forum), “Horii quickly covered his mouth as if he had said something secret.” This account was also confirmed by attendee TheFishyOne, who stated that they and others cheered at the mention of a Chrono Trigger remake. TheFishyOne further shared that the event translator requested Horii’s confirmation, to which he replied, “You didn’t hear anything.” However, we have not been able to independently confirm these reports.
Chrono Trigger Remake May Be Happening
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel a spark of anticipation when I consider the possibility that Chrono Trigger could be getting a remake. While it’s not set in stone yet, given Square Enix’s recent penchant for reviving their classic titles, it certainly wouldn’t surprise me if we heard an announcement about this iconic game soon. After all, the original Chrono Trigger is nowhere to be found on the latest gaming consoles, making a remaster or remake seem like a logical step.
The main point of discussion revolves around the extent a remaster or remake for the classic game, Chrono Trigger, might cover. Although a project on par with the overhaul of Final Fantasy 7 is conceivable, it’s more plausible that a Chrono Trigger remake would be inspired by Square Enix’s approach to the Dragon Quest HD-2D series. To clarify, Square Enix has been updating the original Dragon Quest games with an impressive HD-2D artistic style. The Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake received positive reviews, and fans can anticipate the release of the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake later this year.
