Cities: Skylines 2 Console Delay Is Due To Hardware Limitations, Developer Says

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must confess that my anticipation for Cities: Skylines 2 on console has been a rollercoaster ride. I remember the initial excitement when the announcement was made, followed by the promise of a simultaneous PC and console release. However, the delays have been as unpredictable as the weather in GtaV’s Los Santos.

As an ardent fan eagerly anticipating the console launch of Cities: Skylines 2, I regret to say that we’ll need to be patient for a while longer. In a recent update posted on Steam, the game’s creators, Colossal Order, have shared they are yet to confirm a release date for the console edition of the game on both Xbox Series and PlayStation 5.

The developer has shared an update with the gamers stating that although releasing the game on consoles remains their number one goal, the continued delay is a result of the hardware constraints inherent within the consoles themselves.

As a player, I’m currently encountering troubles that involve both processing (CPU) and visual (GPU) glitches. These hiccups become quite apparent when performing specific actions, leading to frame rate drops or memory overloads. The frustrating part is that these problems are exacerbated by the hardware constraints of the console systems we’re using.

Later, they demonstrated an illustration of a problem consoles often face: “When constructing larger buildings comprising multiple elements, the system can find it challenging to manage the data. During computations such as checking for available space or detecting overlaps with existing assets, performance issues occur, leading to noticeable bottlenecks.

The team asserts that they’ve managed to make the game playable, mainly by reducing the game’s graphical quality substantially. However, they are unwilling to accept this level of compromise since it doesn’t meet their desired standards.

As a dedicated fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the console version of Cities: Skylines II. However, they mentioned that once the simulation and memory usage are optimized to an acceptable level, additional refinements will be necessary. Until these issues are resolved, they can’t provide a release estimate to prevent any premature or misleading announcements. Rest assured, the console release is our top priority. We’re tirelessly working with experts to explore various solutions and bring you the best possible console experience for Cities: Skylines II.

Initially, City Skylines 2 was planned to launch simultaneously on consoles as well as PC approximately a year back. However, it has experienced several postponements instead.
