Which Class Is Best?
Wake up, sleeper; it’s time to pick your starting class.
Starward Vector is the sequel to the exceptional dice-based indie game from 2022. This time, you take on the role of another fugitive sleeper, with the outcome of a die roll deciding whether you achieve freedom or face being discarded.
A significant element influencing your success at overcoming ability tests within this game is the character class you begin with, since each class offers skills advantageous for specific situations, while simultaneously rendering you nearly ineffective in other instances.
To assist you in making a thoughtful choice, let me provide a summary of the three options available for your initial selection within the game.
Extractor
Skill Values | Engineer – 0 |
---|---|
Interface – X | |
Endure – + | |
Intuit – XX | |
Engage – 0 | |
Push | Rally: Accrue STRESS to BOOST your CREW DICE |
Rally Config: +1 Stress // +2 TO LOWEST DICE |
If you prefer a more physical or strength-based approach in role-playing games (RPGs), then the Extractor class will likely resonate with you the most. In Citizen Sleeper, having the ability to withstand adversity plays a significant role, and the Extractor character excels in this aspect.
Improved stamina in the context of this game indicates that this character will perform exceptionally well in activities that necessitate Endurance. This translates to being able to handle demanding tasks and reap greater rewards such as more Chits and reduced energy usage.
On the flip side, this character type may struggle in situations where intuition is crucial, making them potentially risky in interactions with non-player characters, or during instances where correctly interpreting social cues is essential for survival.
Regarding their rally, the Extractor is an outstanding choice if you want to engage in every contract available along the Starward Vector. This class possesses a special skill that boosts the lowest die rolls of your crew, which could be crucial in high-pressure situations where time is of the essence.
Machinist
Skill Values | Engineer – + |
---|---|
Interface – 0 | |
Endure – X | |
Intuit – 0 | |
Engage – XX | |
Push | Rally: Accrue STRESS to FOCUS an ACTION DICE |
Rally Config: +1 STRESS // +2 AND FOCUS LOWEST DICE |
Moving on, there’s the Machinist, a class that’s incredibly proficient and reliable. However, it can be quite challenging for them to sway people or cultivate friendships.
After that, we find the Machinist, who is very efficient in their work but may struggle with social situations like persuading others or making friends.
The power of the Machinist class lies in their versatility, particularly when it comes to repairing and manipulating objects that demand specific tools. Given the space-themed nature of this game, you’ll appreciate how valuable it is to possess a wide range of mechanical skills.
Although these creatures boast an impressive amount of intelligence, their intellectual prowess comes at a cost: they aren’t very durable, making them less effective in physically demanding tasks. Moreover, their social skills are rudimentary, often leading to awkward or unsuccessful interactions with non-player characters.
Concerning push abilities, the Machinist possesses an intriguing trait that offers both potential gains and possible complications. The advantage lies in the ability to increase the value of any die by two points; however, this action also adds a stress point to your character, which can become problematic over time if not managed effectively.
Operator
Skill Values | Engineer – X |
---|---|
Interface – + | |
Endure – XX | |
Intuit – 0 | |
Engage – 0 | |
Push | Rally: Accrue STRESS to REROLL your ACTION DICE |
Rally Config: +1 STRESS // REROLL LOWEST DICE |
To conclude, we come to the Operator class, which shares close proximity with the usual cyberpunk netrunner. This Sleeper thrives in environments where screens and data are abundant, enabling them to effortlessly hack security systems, acquire contract items without causing damage, or navigate through a new space station as if it were second nature.
Moreover, their talent for comprehending intricate systems and discerning patterns extends beyond technical matters; it also proves useful in social settings. This can include employing their intuition to navigate tricky situations, as well as utilizing their communication skills to maintain a flow in a discussion.
To put it straight from my gaming perspective, I’m definitely not the one you’d want on your team for heavy lifting or when we’re up against a tight deadline. I might be good at navigating virtual worlds, but in real life, I’d struggle to keep pace with the tough tasks.
In terms of their Push ability, it’s similar to the Machinist’s skill, allowing you to introduce an element of unpredictability. Instead of adding a stress point to reroll dice like the Machinist, you can choose to re-roll your lowest dice and receive a random result. This could transform a low roll into a high one, or vice versa. It’s a gamble with the potential for significant payoffs.
Which Class Is Best?
In any role-playing game like this one, playing to your character class’s strengths will help you succeed. However, if you aim for the best outcomes in battles or completing tasks quickly and smoothly, certain decisions may be more advantageous than others.
From my perspective, I strongly believe that the Operator class stands out as the most powerful among others due to its unique capability to gauge situations effectively and excel at conversational skill checks more frequently on average. In an era where technology and data reign supreme, the innate talent to comprehend and manipulate this tech for personal advantage is undeniably beneficial.
If you aim to consistently possess abundance of money, energy, and swiftly complete tasks at unprecedented speed, the Extractor might be your best choice, even though they may not be particularly tech-savvy. In some instances, a straightforward ‘rip and tear’ approach can lead to remarkable success.
As a devotee, I find The Machinist straddling an uneasy balance between the realms of mechanical prowess and general aptitude. This often leaves me grappling in scenarios that don’t revolve around machines, so my recommendation is to embrace strength or intellect if you aspire to shine.
When working on assignments, it’s beneficial to have a team with you as they can compensate for your skill gaps. To complete contracts quickly, always bring a full team, and make sure to include NPCs who excel in areas where you might be weak.
