In Sid Meier’s Civilization 7, Firaxis Games has significantly altered the gameplay by introducing a new three-age system. Previously, players would advance through multiple eras with one extensive technology tree. However, in this new version, they progress together through time, each age offering distinct technological and civic trees, and unique gameplay mechanics. This results in a completely fresh experience that sets it apart from the franchise’s previous iterations. Yet, while the three ages bring a refreshing change, there seems to be an element lacking.
Currently, each game ends in what is referred to as the Modern Age, or the Third Age, which marks the point where players explore the stars, dominate nearby territories, cultivate a powerful culture, or establish an economic powerhouse. Although this aligns with typical gameplay in Civilization, it sometimes seems like there could have been an extra age to provide closure. A fourth age would not only offer new elements for players to engage with, but the entire game structure appears to be designed around such an extension.
Civilization 7 Needs a Fourth Age to Bring it All to a Close
It Already Feels Like a Fourth Age Was Planned
Currently, it appears that Civilization 7 was initially intended to include at least three ages, possibly four. The Modern Age is where players ultimately triumph, but certain game elements suggest a potential next stage. For instance, players are given Legacy Points at the end of this age, which usually occur during standard age transitions. These points are earned based on progress in the Legacy Paths and are intended to be used for buffs in the subsequent age. This is odd because the final age would still reward players with these points, yet there’s no way to actually use them.
Furthermore, certain players have pointed out that buildings in Modern Age civilizations are referred to as timeless. Buildings labeled as timeless are those that last through various eras. Since other unique buildings share this label, it might be Firaxis’ method of maintaining consistency. However, it appears a bit unusual for Modern Age civilizations to require timeless buildings. These structures will remain regardless of the game’s outcome, as the game concludes once the age is over.
A Fourth Age Could Also Feature Some Civilization Mainstays
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice that the foundations for a fourth era seem to be taking shape in what we anticipate as Civilization 7. Yet, there are familiar staples from previous iterations conspicuously absent, and their absence is palpable. In the grand scheme of things, the Science Victory in Civilization 7 culminates with the first manned space flight, which means we don’t truly experience technology from our contemporary or future eras. The lack of colossal death robots, a World Congress, and nuclear war being rare occurrences, while not detracting significantly from the gameplay, does leave me yearning for their inclusion in Civilization 7.
Since Civilization 7 seems to be missing a fourth era despite seeming to be on the brink of one, it can sometimes result in rather sudden conclusions. It just doesn’t carry the same sense of grandeur as earlier versions, particularly since the Legacy Paths require players to adhere more strictly to a checklist. However, with the introduction of a fourth era, this issue might be resolved.
In a novel twist, a fourth era could serve as the culmination, wrapping up the game in an impressive manner. Similar to the previous eras, Firaxis might introduce engaging new features tailored for the future, allowing players to experiment with an array of futuristic technologies. As far as it harmonizes effectively with the other three eras, it could be just what this game requires for a perfect finish.
