CK3: Automated Armies Explained

15 ‘Crown’ update for Crusader Kings 3 introduces an exciting new feature – automatic army control. When activated, the game’s AI takes over troop movements, determines when to lay siege, and selects battle locations. This allows players to sit back and enjoy the strategic aspects of the game without having to manage every troop movement manually.

This is ideal for gamers who prefer to bypass the warfare element in CK3, yet it can still offer value to seasoned players when they find themselves in positions of power dealing with minimal conflicts such as a small skirmish or uprising.

How To Turn Automated Armies On In CK3?

To activate automated armies in Crusader Kings 3, players should navigate to the military section on the screen’s right side. In the upper right corner of this tab, there’s a gear icon that toggles these AI-managed armies on or off. This very same icon is responsible for deactivating them as well.

The update additionally enhanced AI-controlled armies, allowing players to perceive their objectives more clearly, and ensuring that the AI operates more effectively towards achieving victory goals.

AI-controlled forces will be mobilized, and they will adaptively deploy to strategic locations and either engage or avoid conflicts as necessary. They may divide into smaller groups to prevent excessive losses or to attack multiple targets simultaneously. In the heat of battle, players have the option to take control by disabling the automated forces when their intervention is required.

Options For Automated Armies In CK3

Near the gear icon that controls AI armies’ activation and deactivation, you’ll find a button labeled as “Advanced Settings.” Here, players have the freedom to decide if they prefer these mechanisms to function automatically or manually.

  • Assigning Commanders: This is fine to automate.
  • Raiding: Only available for cultures that can raid.
  • Hiring Troops: Best to set it to manual unless you have loads of gold.

To enhance the experience of immersion and role-play in CK3, you might want to enable automatic armies when your leader isn’t giving orders, particularly if they’re distant. This way, decisions can be made by your commanders.

What Players Still Need To Do Manually

Although players can delegate the management of combat, there are certain tasks they must handle personally.

  • Hire men-at-arms and upgrade their ranks: If players don’t build an army with strong men-at-arms, their automated armies will be weak with only levies.
  • Station men-at-arms units: This boosts the stats of men-at-arms.
  • End Wars: While wars will eventually end by themselves, they won’t always do so upon achieving 100 warscore. Players should still keep an eye on the warscore, so that they can stand down their troops sooner and reap the rewards.
