Classic Chat Program Sees a Major Surge in Users Following Discord Changes

Okay, so I’m hearing a lot of chatter that TeamSpeak is starting to get popular again, and honestly, I get it. Discord’s been making some changes lately that a lot of us aren’t loving, and TeamSpeak is looking like a solid alternative for voice chat. It’s a bit older, so some newer gamers might not know it, but it could be exactly what we need if we’re frustrated with what’s happening over on Discord.

Discord users are unhappy with a new policy requiring age verification to maintain full access to the platform. If users don’t verify their age, they’ll be switched to a limited “teen account” that restricts access to certain content and channels on some servers.

As Discord Users Say Goodbye, TeamSpeak Says Hello

via TeamSpeak

After Discord announced upcoming changes in March, many users started exploring other platforms, and TeamSpeak has become a popular choice. TeamSpeak has recently experienced a large surge in new users and community sign-ups, which has temporarily strained its server capacity, especially in areas like the US. TeamSpeak is asking for understanding as they work to increase their server availability and accommodate the increased demand, likely driven by users unhappy with the changes on Discord.

TeamSpeak is a voice chat program, similar to Discord, that lets people talk to each other in channels. It first launched in 2001 – well before Discord came along in 2015. Over the years, TeamSpeak has been updated with a simpler interface and features like screen sharing and text messaging. A key focus for TeamSpeak is privacy and security; they use strong encryption to protect conversations and state they don’t have access to user voice or text chats. This might be especially attractive to users concerned about privacy when verifying their identity on other platforms like Discord.

Age Verification is Becoming More Common, But It’s Not Popular

More online services are now asking users to prove their age. This is happening because companies want to protect their users, and new laws in some countries require it. For example, both Discord and Roblox now have age verification systems. While intended to improve safety, this has upset some players who are required to share personal information like ID or selfies. The new rules have also led to some users losing contact with friends, as the platforms are separating people into different age groups and limiting who can communicate with whom.

Some online services are now using less strict methods to verify players’ ages, though these checks can still feel intrusive to some. For example, Steam now asks UK users for proof of age before they can view mature-rated games, but this simply requires a valid credit card with matching information – something many UK users already have on file. Similarly, Call of Duty recently announced age verification, currently just asking players to enter their birthdate.

I’ve been a gamer for ages, and it’s amazing to me that TeamSpeak is still around! I remember it being huge, and apparently, it was even the official voice chat for the Overwatch League. So many other voice services have popped up and then disappeared – even Skype is shutting down in 2025! But TeamSpeak has lasted a full 25 years, and it feels like it’s getting popular all over again with a bunch of new people joining up. It’s really cool to see!
