As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the recent revival of the classic Doom series is a delightful throwback to my youth. Having played the original Doom back in 1993 when it was first released, I’ve witnessed its impact on the FPS genre and the gaming industry as a whole. The unexpected announcement of the enhanced Doom + Doom 2 remaster during QuakeCon 2024 has been a pleasant surprise indeed!

To my delight, during QuakeCon 2024’s opening day, it was unveiled that there are upgraded versions of the original first two Doom games! Now, I can play the Doom + Doom 2 remaster on my PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and even Game Pass. This is an ideal choice for long-time Doom enthusiasts like myself, as we eagerly await the launch of the highly anticipated title, Doom: The Dark Ages.

1993 saw the debut of “Doom,” a game that continues to hold immense influence over the gaming world. This groundbreaking title paved the way for numerous fantastic first-person shooter (FPS) games in the ’90s, giving birth to many imitators and catapulting the FPS genre into widespread popularity.

At QuakeCon 2024, Bethesda unveiled a remastered collection of Doom and Doom 2. This updated edition can now be played on Steam and Xbox Game Pass, offering instant access to gamers. The revamped first two Doom games come with various user-friendly updates such as cross-platform deathmatch and cooperative play for up to 16 participants. It also offers support for 4K resolution and a frame rate of 120 FPS.

What Is Included In The Doom + Doom 2 Enhanced Edition?

  • Doom (1993)
  • Doom 2
  • Master Levels for Doom 2
  • TNT: Evilution
  • The Plutonia Experiment
  • No Rest for the Living
  • Sigil
  • Legacy of Rust (a new episode created in collaboration by individuals from id Software, Nightdive Studios, and MachineGames)
  • A new Deathmatch map pack featuring 25 maps (to accompany the existing 18) bringing the total Deathmatch levels to 43

These enhancements don’t represent everything added to the enhanced titles, though. The package also comes with several campaigns, including the Master Levels for Doom 2 and projects such as TNT: Evilution, The Plutonia Experiment, No Rest for the Living, and the Romero-made Megawad Sigil. There will be a total of 43 Deathmatch levels, including 25 new maps, and players will be able to select community-made Doom mods via an in-game browser, making accessing them much easier. According to Bethesda, many mods from the last 25 years will be compatible with this new release due to the BOOM source engine.

The latest edition, which includes both Doom and Doom 2, is part of a current wave of updated versions of id Software’s classic games. For instance, we saw the launch of Quake Remastered in 2021, and later, in 2023, the arrival of Quake 2 Remastered. These new releases have significantly enhanced aspects like resolution and multiplayer functionality.

As a die-hard Doom fan, there’s nothing quite like diving back into the origins of this iconic franchise, and for now, playing through Doom + Doom 2 is the best way to satiate my appetite. It serves as a fantastic bridge until we get our hands on Doom: The Dark Ages in 2025. This exciting new addition to the series was unveiled during the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase with an enticing trailer, promising a prequel setting reminiscent of the Middle Ages. What’s more, Doom: The Dark Ages is expected to introduce innovative mechanics, such as a parry system, that will undoubtedly elevate the gameplay experience for fans like myself.
