Great news for Pokemon fans! The Pokemon Company has announced that Pokemon FireRed and Pokemon LeafGreen will be released on Nintendo Switch. This is something fans have been asking for – the chance to play these classic Pokemon games on the newest Nintendo console.
The Nintendo Switch already has plenty of Pokémon games. Several older titles, like Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, are available through the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack, and newer main series games such as Pokémon Legends: Z-A, Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee, and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are also available. Recently, rumors about two classic Pokémon games coming to the Switch have been confirmed.
Pokemon is Finally Bringing LeafGreen and FireRed to Switch
To celebrate 30 years of Pokémon, the classic games Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are coming to Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2! Pokémon announced the news a week before their annual Pokémon Day presentation, which is unusual – they typically save big reveals for the event itself. You’ll be able to download both games from the Switch eShop, but there won’t be any physical copies available. The games will be released right after the Pokémon Day presentation on February 27th at 6 am PT, giving fans a great way to finish out the month.

The Pokémon Company released a brief trailer for Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen. However, these games won’t be added to the Nintendo Switch Online library. It’s important to note that these are the original games from 2004 for the Game Boy Advance, not updated versions. While players can still trade and battle locally at Pokémon Centers using the Wireless Club, online play won’t be available, which some fans may find disappointing. Those with the upcoming Switch 2 will be able to use the GameChat feature while playing.
Good news for gamers! Both games are now available to pre-order on the Nintendo eShop for $19.99 each. If you pre-order, they’ll automatically download to your Switch or Switch 2, so you can start playing as soon as they’re released. Plus, the games are very small – only about 40MB each – so you won’t need to worry about running out of storage space.
Following the release of Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee – reimagined versions of the original Pokémon Yellow – FireRed and LeafGreen, remakes of the classic Pokémon Red and Blue, are now available on Nintendo Switch. Some fans wondered why the original Game Boy versions weren’t released, but Nintendo explained they wanted to offer players the most polished experience with these enhanced remakes.
With fans requesting these two games on Switch for years, it makes us wonder what else Pokémon Day will reveal. Considering it’s the 30th anniversary, the Pokémon community is anticipating major announcements and releases. The early announcement of these games suggests even bigger surprises are coming, possibly including the first look at Pokémon Wind and Wave, the long-rumored next generation games. We’ll also likely see a final presentation for Pokémon Pokopia, launching in March, and more details about Pokémon Champions, set to release later this year.
