Back in 2003, one of the highly acclaimed games for PlayStation 2, “Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy,” has now been upgraded and is playable on the PS4. Not only on the PlayStation 2, but the original version of “Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy” was also launched on Xbox and GameCube. However, its remastered version was initially released for PC and Nintendo Switch platforms.

First conceived by Eurocom and later enhanced by THQ Nordic, “Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy” is a thrilling action-adventure game that combines puzzle and platforming elements. Set within Ancient Egypt, this tale chronicles the adventures of the Sphinx and Tutankhamun as they strive to surmount the obstacles laid out by Set, an Egyptian deity. Released for the PS2 in the early 2000s, it was re-imagined and distributed on Steam in 2017, a full 14 years following its debut. Later, it found its way onto the Nintendo Switch in 2019. Now, over seven years after its initial PC release, the remastered edition has found a new home on a contemporary PlayStation console, with an Xbox adaptation set to follow shortly.

In an unexpected step, THQ Nordic has transported the game “Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy” to PS4 on April 1, making it playable on Sony’s system for contemporary gamers. Enthusiasts can immediately jump into this classic game by buying it from the PS Store at a price of $14.99. The publisher has further announced that they will release the “Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy” Egyptian storyline on Xbox One on April 15. Alongside the debut of the PS4 version, developers have also posted a trailer, showcasing the two primary playable characters battling various adversaries and solving environmental puzzles. Interestingly, this trailer seems to be quite similar to the one released for its Switch port, which was over five years old.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy Makes a Surprise Leap to PS4

The emergence of timeless games like “Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy” on contemporary platforms benefits the entire gaming community by ensuring these titles are passed down for future generations. Resurrecting old games through updated versions gives long-time enthusiasts a hassle-free opportunity to revisit their favorites, while also providing new players with a chance to explore these classic games firsthand. Thankfully, there’s been significant progress in this area, as platforms like GOG have launched preservation programs dedicated to offering gamers easy access to their beloved old titles.

Currently, THQ Nordic is working on the follow-up to their 2018 demolition derby racing game Wreckfest. On March 20, they started the early access phase for Wreckfest 2, which costs USD 11.99 on Steam. This allows players to contribute to the development of the game before it’s officially launched on PC and current-generation consoles.
