In their summer showcase, Sony introduced a fresh take on a long-standing puzzle game for our delight with Lumines Arise, set to release in autumn 2025 from Tetris Effect’s creators, Enhance. This is the ninth installment of the series and, interestingly, the first one specifically developed for the ninth generation of consoles. Throughout its illustrious past, Lumines has been available on numerous platforms such as PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, Playstation Vita, mobile phones dating back to 2006, and even more recently, Lumines Remastered brought the classic gameplay to the eighth generation of consoles.
The game titled “Lumines Arise” signifies a comeback to the series for Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who was instrumental in creating the original “Lumines” that debuted as a launch title on the PlayStation Portable back in 2004. This franchise is renowned for its captivating graphics and melodious tunes. The Lumines series bears a resemblance to other tile-matching puzzle games, such as “Tetris” and “Columns“, but what makes it unique is its Timeline, which is a vertical line that moves synchronously with the music across the stage, removing blocks created by the player. Larger blocks yield more points in this system.
The game titled “Lumines Arise” is set to debut in autumn 2025 on PC via Steam and PlayStation 5, with the added feature of PS VR2 compatibility if preferred. A sneak peek of the game will be available this summer. The trailer for “Lumines Arise” showcases a vast audio journey complemented by breathtaking visual effects, perfectly synced to the rhythm of the Timeline. Music enthusiasts who enjoyed the soundtrack of “Tetris Effect” may recognize the electronic soundscape, as “Lumines Arise” includes brand-new music from Hydelic, the composer of its acclaimed score. The inclusion of VR in this game is an exciting prospect, reminiscent of how “Tetris Effect ” was one of the top VR games released in 2018.
Sony is Reviving a PSP Classic With Lumines Arise
In the game Lumines Arise, a fresh mechanic titled Burst has been introduced to enhance its traditional puzzle gameplay. As players clear blocks and stack combos, they simultaneously fill a gauge located above the Timeline. Once full, pressing a designated button triggers Burst, where a block remains stationary for additional combo building, before time expires, rewarding the player with a significant increase in their score. Moreover, Lumines Arise offers a character creation system, enabling players to customize their avatars and designs to reflect their unique personalities.
Based on the reveal trailer, Lumines Arise seems poised to deliver another stellar production from Tetsuya Mizuguchi and Enhance. As of now, it’s only confirmed for PlayStation 5 and PC, but let’s hope it eventually arrives on the Nintendo Switch 2 as well. Given that the game was initially designed for mobile devices, it seems fitting that Lumines Arise may eventually revert to its original format and join Tetris Effect on a portable Nintendo console.
