Clayster Has Officially Retired From Call of Duty Esports

As a long-time fan who grew up watching Clayster dominate Call of Duty, this retirement feels like the end of an era. I remember him as a young gun from Virginia, playing out of his mom’s house, now he’s a hometown hero who’s seen it all – from competing in small bedrooms to filling up arenas.

As James ‘Clayster’ Eubanks, I’ve decided to hang up my gaming controller after an incredible journey spanning over 15 years in the world of esports and Call of Duty. From the early days of COD 4: Modern Warfare, I’ve been a part of 14 different titles, leaving an indelible mark on this dynamic field. Now it’s time for me to pass the baton to the next generation of champions.

In his farewell video, Clayster shared that, like numerous Call of Duty professionals, he transitioned from Halo and immersed himself in the Call of Duty scene since he was 16. At present, aged 32, he is stepping away from competitive Call of Duty gaming.

From The Beginning

Clayster’s retirement signifies the conclusion of a notable period. He is the final original player to depart from active competition at the pinnacle of Call of Duty esports, having competed during the last season of the Call of Duty League with the Carolina Royal Ravens. His career path has encompassed some of the most esteemed organizations and teams in esports, such as:

  • OpTic
  • Kaliber
  • Envy
  • FaZe Clan
  • eUnited
  • NYSL
  • Dallas Empire

In a 29-minute video, Clayster openly shared his feelings with his followers, detailing the challenges he faces in maintaining his competitive status.

It’s tougher than ever to emerge victorious in Call of Duty, given the fierce competition. The matches are exceptionally challenging against skillful teams. Even attempting to compete is a struggle, let alone securing a win. In today’s CDL scene, it’s a real challenge. I gave my all, as I wanted to achieve success for her, in honor of her memory. It’s tough to focus with so much weighing on one’s mind.

In that remark, Eubanks mentioned his younger sister who sadly passed away during sleep in August 2022.

Year after year, Clayster has persistently held his ground as a formidable competitor, despite the fact that many thought his peak was nearing an end. He continued to be a steadfast leader and a dynamic character, constantly striving to enhance his reputation as a three-time world champion. With 19 victories under his belt and over $1.1 million in winnings, he’s among the most successful players in history.

It’s tough for me to express myself, but I’m deeply appreciative. From chatting in my room at home to performing on massive stages, I got to witness the journey firsthand during competitions. Therefore, I feel incredibly grateful that I was part of the experience as the wave swept through.

I’m incredibly grateful for the journey my career has taken me on and the supporters I’ve gained along the way. It’s like a dream come true for someone like me who started out in a small town in Virginia. Back home, they consider me a local legend, which is hard to believe sometimes.

This is a significant milestone for any aficionado of Call of Duty esports. It’s not something entirely new or surprising, but witnessing it in such a prominent way can be hard to accept. I developed an affection for competitive Call of Duty around the time Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was popular (in 2009), and players like Scump, Crimsix, Karma, and Clayster have left an indelible mark on me over many years.

What a way to usher in the Black Ops 6 season.
