As a long-time fan of Black Panther and Marvel games, I’m excited to see Cliffhanger taking on the challenge of creating a unique Black Panther experience amidst the competition. With Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra also focusing on Black Panther, it’s crucial for Cliffhanger to differentiate its game while staying true to the source material.

Newcomer Cliffhanger, an up-and-coming Electronic Arts (EA) developer, is poised to make a big impression with its upcoming take on “Black Panther.” However, it’s crucial that they don’t lose sight of the broader landscape of Marvel video games. Currently working on two different projects featuring Black Panther as the main character, Cliffhanger’s game needs to stand out from the others and offer a unique interpretation of the beloved superhero character.

EA’s confidence in Cliffhanger, a new company, is evident with their appointment to create a game featuring one of Marvel’s influential characters. However, since this is Cliffhanger’s debut title, it’s impossible to predict what we can expect. The team at Cliffhanger aims to make Black Panther shine among other games in development. With Skydance releasing “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra” around the same time, featuring a different version of Black Panther, Cliffhanger should strive for distinctiveness while staying true to the source material.

Black Panther’s Mask Can Hide Different Heroes

An advantage for Cliffhanger is that the Black Panther’s origin allows for character variation. As the Black Panther is a role passed down in Wakanda’s royal lineage, each bearer brings their unique style to the mask. In “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra,” players assume the identity of Azzuri, an ’40s Black Panther. Given his stealthy approach against foes, this interpretation aligns with that era’s Black Panther. However, Cliffhanger must be cautious not to overdo this gameplay style for their rendition of the hero.

As a gamer, if I were in Cliffhanger’s shoes and wanted to deliver an exceptional solo Black Panther experience for fans, I’d strongly consider bringing T’challa, the Black Panther from the MCU, into the spotlight. By doing so, we could create an advantageous situation since fans are already acquainted with this character. Drawing inspiration from Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) stories would also enable us to establish a foundation for a distinctive action experience, setting it apart from the stealth-focused Rise of Hydra. This approach not only helps distinguish the two Black Panther iterations but aligns with fans’ anticipation of what they expect in a solo superhero game.

How to Best Adapt Black Panther for an Action Game

If Cliffhanger decides to base T’challa’s story on the modern version of the character, there are various paths it could take. A good starting point would be highlighting what makes T’challa beloved by fans. The current interpretation of Black Panther, popularized by Ta-Nehisi Coates’ comic series, effectively portrays T’challa as both a hero and a king. By emphasizing his dual nature, players will have the opportunity to assume the roles of both a courageous protector and a conflicted monarch. This dynamic setting can lead to challenging decisions in the game and spectacular action scenes.

Fans have been captivated by the portrayal of the kingdom, Wakanda, in the Black Panther films. The futuristic, afro-futuristic backdrop has taken viewers on a journey where progress and tradition coexist.
