Clovers Studio Head Hideki Kamiya Says They Won’t Solely Focus on Sequels

Enthusiasts are buzzing with anticipation following the unveiling of Okami 2 at The Game Awards, as they eagerly await the highly anticipated sequel to their cherished title.

Hideki Kamiya, an experienced video game designer who previously worked at Capcom and Platinum Games, has just established his own studio called Clovers Studio. Their inaugural project is the development of a sequel to the popular game Okami, with Capcom serving as the publisher for this new venture.

Although Kamiya expresses eagerness about re-entering the Okami universe, it’s essential to clarify that his fresh team isn’t solely dedicating their efforts to established intellectual properties or franchises.

In a chat with GameSpark magazine, he expressed Clovers’ approach to game creation: “We keep our options open in developing games. When we aim to launch an engaging title as a company, it could be intriguing to continue a series, not just introduce a new intellectual property. Alternatively, we might create a successor spiritually to something captivating that we find worthwhile. In essence, I believe there’s no boundary to the ways we innovate when creating fascinating games.

Clovers Studio Is Only Working on One Project: The Okami Sequel

Clovers is dedicating all their efforts towards a single project, and Kamiya wants it clear that they aren’t obligated to continue work on existing franchises. Instead, he and his team are developing a project which, by coincidence, is a follow-up.

Currently, we’re solely focused on one project, which coincidentally is an Intellectual Property I’ve previously contributed to. Consequently, there seems to be a strong association with the past. This attention we’re receiving is appreciated, but it’s crucial to clarify that this single project doesn’t encompass our entire company’s potential. In essence, while this is our debut project, it doesn’t define the full scope of what we can achieve as a company.

As the day winds down, it’s a constant endeavor for Kamiya to create engaging video games, and currently, that’s Okami 2. However, there might be fresh projects on the horizon as well.

Regarding whether their upcoming game is a sequel or spin-off doesn’t matter much to Kamiya and his Clovers team. What they truly aspire for is creating enjoyable, engaging games. Occasionally, this involves collaborating with big names in the industry such as Capcom.
