CM Punk, the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, is still disappointed that the 2017 horror game Friday the 13th is no longer available. A big fan of horror movies and games, Punk considers Friday the 13th to be one of the greatest games ever made, and he was saddened when support for it ended in 2024.
CM Punk has been champion since defeating Jey Uso in November, but his impact on wrestling goes much further than any title. He’s been a prominent figure in the industry since 1997, with successful runs in WWE, ECW, AEW, TNA, and Ring of Honor. Despite being fired from AEW in September 2023 following a backstage issue and sustaining an injury during his WWE return at the 2024 Royal Rumble, Punk has consistently been involved in high-profile rivalries with stars like McIntyre, Seth Rollins, Gunther, and John Cena. Currently, as champion, he’s widely considered the biggest star on the RAW brand.
CM Punk Calls Old Friday the 13th ‘The Greatest Video Game Ever Made’
CM Punk recently sat down for a 33-minute interview on the YouTube channel My Mom’s Basement with Robbie Fox, where they talked about many things, including professional wrestling, acting, and his love for movies and video games, especially horror. The conversation turned to the Friday the 13th film series, and after Punk suggested a reboot, Fox mentioned Punk’s fondness for a now-discontinued video game he used to play a lot. Punk enthusiastically stated, “I think it’s the greatest video game ever made, and they just stopped making it, which really bothers me.”
It wasn’t Illfonic’s choice to take the game offline. Launched in May 2017, the game featured 8-player matches where one player controlled Jason Voorhees and the other seven were potential victims. While reviews were mixed, a single-player mode was added later, and the game built a sizable community, even getting a Nintendo Switch version in August 2019. Unfortunately, just over a year after that, licensing disagreements with the franchise creator, Victor Miller, forced the closure of the public game servers, leaving only single-player and player-to-player multiplayer options. Online play was completely shut down by the end of 2024. Although fans attempted to revive the game with a mod called Friday the 13th Resurrected, a copyright claim stopped their efforts indefinitely.
Image via Gun Media It’s not the first time I’ve seen Punk bummed about the game shutting down. When they finally turned off the multiplayer servers for good, he posted on Instagram to honor the game. He shared a pic of his TV screen showing Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, and just wrote, “Goodbye, sweet prince,” with a sad face emoji. It was a really touching way to say farewell.
Horror, Inc. has confirmed a new Friday the 13th game is in development, and initial reports indicate it will feature the same asymmetrical gameplay as the 2017 game. While asked about other topics, the interviewer didn’t specifically ask, nor did the interviewee mention, his excitement for the new game, but his overall enthusiasm for the Friday the 13th franchise was clear throughout the conversation. He did discuss the upcoming Crystal Lake television series from A24 and Peacock, but he’s holding off on sharing his opinion until more details are revealed. He stated, “Fans haven’t seen enough Jason Voorhees content in years, and that’s not right.”
