As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that Xbox Game Pass has been a game-changer for me. The service has provided me with countless hours of entertainment, and the addition of blockbuster titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has only sweetened the deal.
Xbox Game Pass boasts an extensive collection of more than 100 games, with fresh titles added every month. However, it’s not just the monthly additions that attract many Game Pass subscribers; it’s also the guarantee that any new Microsoft-developed games will be accessible on the service on their release date. For quite some time, this arrangement has been advantageous for both parties. Subscribers enjoy high-quality AAA games at a significantly reduced cost, while first-party franchises gain a broader audience.
Certainly, it seems Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, without a doubt, didn’t require an increase in viewership. However, its arrival on Xbox Game Pass is a significant advantage for subscribers. At the same time, it’s clear that Black Ops 6‘s popularity on Game Pass is also a substantial victory for Microsoft following the nearly $70 billion purchase of Activision-Blizzard. Yet, this triumph may have inadvertently set unrealistic expectations, making it challenging for the company to meet those standards again.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Has Raised Expectations for Xbox Game Pass
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Has Been a Huge Success for Xbox Game Pass
Over the past few years, the “Call of Duty” series has been facing another consistent dip in performance, with each new release receiving less favorable reviews from critics and selling fewer copies compared to previous games. The latest additions, such as “Call of Duty: Vanguard” (2021) and “Modern Warfare 2” (2022), have garnered mediocre scores on Metacritic, with “Vanguard” earning a 73 and “Modern Warfare 2” slightly higher at 75. The previous year’s installment, “Modern Warfare 3,” holds the unenviable title of the lowest-rated entry in the franchise’s history, with a disappointing score of 56.
The popular “Call of Duty” series was in dire need of a comeback following the disappointing release of last year’s game. With “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6”, that’s exactly what they delivered. It offers an outstanding single-player campaign, engaging multiplayer modes, and the reintroduction of Zombies in rounds. The game has received exceptional reviews from critics such as VG247, Forbes, and NME, all awarding it a perfect score of 10. Currently, “Black Ops 6” holds an impressive Metacritic score of 85, which is the highest the franchise has achieved since 2011’s “Modern Warfare 3”.
Beyond receiving critical praise, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has achieved remarkable commercial triumph. In a recent financial discussion, Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, declared that the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was the “most successful Call of Duty release to date.” Furthermore, Nadella stated that Black Ops 6 “established a new record” for new Game Pass subscribers on its debut day. In all aspects, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been a significant achievement, yet it’s worth noting that Microsoft might find it challenging to match these figures in the near future.
Xbox Game Pass’ November and December Line-Ups Might Not Be Able to Reach The Same Heights
For the remainder of 2024, Xbox Game Pass continues to boast an impressive roster of games. This month marks the release of not one but two eagerly anticipated sequels: Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 and STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl. These sequels promise to build significantly upon their predecessors, but they pale in comparison to the massive following enjoyed by the Call of Duty series.
In similar fashion, one might also express that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, slated for Xbox Game Pass in 2024, appears promising based on recent previews. This upcoming title seems to deliver an adventure game experience that Xbox gamers don’t often encounter. However, even a renowned franchise as old as Indiana Jones may not garner the same subscriber numbers for Game Pass as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
