CoD players fear “tiny” Area 99 map will be Warzone’s Shipment

As a gamer with over two decades of Call of Duty under my belt, I must admit that my initial reaction to the unveiling of Warzone’s Area 99 map was a mix of excitement and trepidation. The idea of exploring the origins of Nuketown is intriguing, but the concerns about its size are valid. I remember the days of playing Shipment and feeling like I was stuck in a never-ending cycle of close quarters combat. If Area 99 turns out to be another miniaturized battlefield, it might be a bit too much for my aging reflexes!

The recently revealed Area 99 map for Warzone, during the CoD Next event, has sparked concerns among players due to its reported size, with some likening it to the compact layout of Shipment.

With the launch of Black Ops 6 Season 1, Treyarch introduces a fresh battlefield – Area 99. This map represents their interpretation of a Resurgence design, delving into the history of the legendary Nuketown, initially introduced in Black Oops of 2010. Key locations within Area 99 include Mannequin Assembly and Test Site, reflecting the site’s former role as a nuclear test location where Nuketown was constructed.

As a gamer myself, I’ve been looking forward to uncovering the history of one of Call of Duty’s iconic locations in the upcoming update. However, I can’t help but share some apprehension about the new map that’s been causing quite a stir among the gaming community. The main point of contention seems to be its size – many responses to ‘Masteroogway7207’s’ Reddit post echo concerns that it might not be expansive enough for our usual, high-octane battles.

One player mused, “It seems quite compact and doesn’t appear to have a large play area. I just hope it’s not that way,” while another expressed curiosity, “I’ve always been curious about what Call of Duty: Warzone would be like on the Shipment map.”

Another fan commented on the “tiny” size and layout, agreeing that it almost feels like a Black Ops 6 map: “I’ll keep an open mind until I actually play it but I’m concerned it looks too linear like a multiplayer map. I hope the bigger buildings give it verticality and depth.”

During the Call of Duty Next stream, they let us know that Area 99 will be about the same scale as Rebirth Island – the tiniest battlefield in the annals of Warzone so far. As a fan, I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for this compact but action-packed map!

Apart from its size, players have raised concerns about the map’s appearance and environment as well. Critics on X post from CharlieIntel described it as “bland and dusty” with a “washed out” color scheme. Some users even went as far as calling it “trash” based on early footage that has been released.

“Another person expressed frustration, saying something like, ‘I’ve had enough of this desert landscape on this map. I much prefer diverse terrains and cityscapes instead.'”

To fully experience Area 99 in motion, we’ll need to wait until Season 1 when Warzone syncs with Black Ops 6. However, if you’re hesitant about the new map, there are other options to keep you engaged such as Urzikstan Ranked Play or the reintroduction of Verdansk.
