CoD players rally against forced texture streaming causing major lag in Warzone & MW3

As a long-time Call of Duty fan who’s fought through countless battles since Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) first graced our screens, I must admit, I’m finding myself dismayed by the latest update that’s causing quite a stir among players. The On-Demand Texture Streaming setting, while initially intended to reduce file sizes and pave the way for Black Ops 6’s new UI, seems to have backfired, leaving us with laggy matches and popping textures that are more disorientating than a helicopter ride over Verdansk.

A major MW3 graphics setting change is causing laggy matches for players as they’re now forced to enable On-Demand Texture Streaming.

In simpler terms, the MW3 Season 5 Reloaded update marked the beginning of a revamp for the Call of Duty HQ, designed to minimize the size of the app’s files and future updates, paving the way for a fresh user interface in Black Ops 6.

In the recent updates, players no longer can disable On-Demand Texture Streaming. Instead, they are given two alternatives – Optimized and Minimal settings. This adjustment aims to decrease game file sizes by streaming textures rather than saving them in the game files. However, it’s essential to have a robust internet connection for this feature to function effectively.

Initially, it was suggested to deactivate this specific setting in both MW3 and Warzone to avoid lag. But now, due to being compelled to keep it active, players are experiencing laggy games, leading to their dissatisfaction.

User ‘BryanCRT__’ recently posted a video demonstrating the negative impact of the Season 5 Reloaded update on multiplayer gameplay in Modern Warfare 3, as observed from his personal experience.

welcome to forced texture streaming

In the video, it’s clear that the game is running quite slowly, causing objects and textures to appear and disappear frequently. Watching it is already confusing, and many others are encountering the same issue as well.

There are tons of complaints about texture streaming on social media, with one Reddit post calling for the change to be reversed, or for the devs to consider offering players the option of downloading the textures separately at the expense of a bigger file size.

Forced texture streaming is now a thing. Hopefully with enough feedback, we can have this reversed

In agreement, one comment read, “Yep, connection to their servers can be absolutely abysmal at times, now with forced texture streaming on top of it? What a joke. Just let me download the 64gb textures once and be done.”

Players fondly recall the option to download a separate texture pack in MW2019 and are hoping for its reintroduction. They remember it as being generally hassle-free.

As an enthusiast, I can only hope that the developers will listen to the feedback and adapt accordingly, considering any modifications they might make down the line.

As the Black Ops 6 beta approaches, I’m gearing up for the best gaming experience possible. To ensure a smooth ride, I’ve decided to go with the Minimal settings for now, letting my connection handle the texture streaming. And don’t forget to tweak the rest of your MW3 PC settings to maximize FPS and performance! Game on!
