Commander Shepard Actors Comment on Possible Mass Effect 4 Return

Spoilers for the Mass Effect Trilogy follow.

Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer, the voices of Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect series, are eager to reprise their roles in a future game. However, BioWare hasn’t reached out to them about returning yet. Both actors enjoyed playing Shepard and would gladly come back if given the chance.

The Mass Effect trilogy has become a legendary series in gaming over the past twenty years. While the ending of Mass Effect 3 proved controversial, the trilogy as a whole is considered iconic, largely thanks to Commander Shepard, the player-customizable hero. BioWare announced a new Mass Effect game in 2020, but details have been scarce since then.

Okay, so everyone’s been wondering if Commander Shepard will ever return, and apparently, the actors who voiced Shepard are wondering the same thing! Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer – you know, the voices of female and male Shepard – were on this show called Fall Damage, answering fan questions from YouTube. Right away, Jennifer was talking about that ‘Destruction’ ending and how Shepard could have survived, and she basically said we should all email BioWare and tell them we want more Shepard! She and Mark are totally up for it, and she even said she’d be there ‘with bells on’ if they asked them to come back. It’s awesome to hear they’re so enthusiastic about potentially reprising the role!

Meer matched Hale’s excitement, jokingly pretending to be serious when he said he was on board, “but under any circumstances.” It looks like if BioWare decides to bring back the first Human Spectre in the next game, they shouldn’t have trouble getting both Hale and Meer to reprise their roles as Shepard in the next Mass Effect.

I encourage all fans to reach out to the game developers and let them know we want to play as Shepard again. We’re dedicated and will absolutely show up if they decide to create more content with that character – I would be first in line to play!

The actors’ public statements about wanting to reprise their roles as Shepard suggest they haven’t been contacted about returning for a new Mass Effect game. This could be because development is still in early stages, or it might mean Shepard won’t be involved at all. Either way, a new Mass Effect project is likely quite a ways off, so fans will probably have to wait a while to get definitive answers.

What Do We Actually Know About the Next Mass Effect?

Details about the next Mass Effect game are still scarce – we don’t even know its title, or if it’s a direct sequel to the original trilogy or something new after Andromeda. However, we’ve gotten a few hints. Former BioWare director Casey Hudson shared some concept art back in 2019, and a short teaser trailer appeared at The Game Awards in 2020, shortly after he left the company. The trailer showed Liara discovering an N7 logo in the snow, confirming the game takes place after Mass Effect 3 and likely isn’t a direct sequel to Andromeda, which is set 600 years later in a different galaxy. Despite this, the trailer included imagery of twin galaxies and quotes from Andromeda, suggesting the spinoff might still play a role in the story.

Hudson is now working on Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic as CEO and director of Arcanaut Studios.

Recently, Mike Gamble, an executive producer at BioWare, released new concept art featuring a group of Krogan engaged in combat. He revealed the piece, titled “Civil War,” depicts a future scene and may hint at a storyline for the next Mass Effect game.

It’s been a tough year for BioWare, and honestly, as a big fan, it was really upsetting to hear about the layoffs. They lost some incredible people who worked on the Mass Effect series for years – like Trick and Karin Weekes, both of whom contributed so much to the games I love. But even with all that going on, it sounds like development on the next Mass Effect is still moving forward! They’ve kept a small team of familiar faces, including Parrish Ley and Derek Watts, who were key to the look and feel of the original games. It might be a while before we get to see anything new, but it’s a relief to know that the project hasn’t been abandoned.
