Comparing Star Wars Outlaws Kay Vess to Star Wars Jedis Cal Kestis

As a seasoned gamer with a lifelong love for the Star Wars universe, I must say that Kay Vess and Cal Kestis are two of the most intriguing protagonists to grace our screens. While they share the same galaxy, their approaches could not be more different.

Over the years, Star Wars has amassed a large library of protagonists for players to root for. The original trilogy had the powerful Luke Skywalker, the prequels let players see the fall of Anakin Skywalker, and the sequels gave them a look at the next generation in Rey Skywalker. Through video games, they have been treated to a wide variety of adventures, including Star Wars Jedi‘s Cal Kestis and Star Wars Battlefront 2‘s Iden Versio. And now with the launch of Star Wars Outlaws, they have been introduced to the wise-cracking scoundrel Kay Vess.

Just as Star Wars Outlaws pioneers a new path for contemporary Star Wars stories, Kay Vess stands out amongst traditional protagonists. Apart from Han Solo, fans haven’t delved into such an adventure before, making it a welcome shift in perspective. However, since she is just the third modern Star Wars video game heroine, viewers will inevitably compare her to other characters. In particular, many may find similarities with Cal Kestis, but they could not be more disparate.

Star Wars’ Kay Vess and Cal Kestis Approach the Galaxy Very Differently

Star Wars Jedi’s Cal Kestis Wants to Save the Galaxy

Initially, players of Star Wars encountered Cal Kestis in the game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. In this game, he had taken refuge on the planet Bracca following Order 66. It was there that he was found by the Empire and compelled to escape with the aid of the Mantis’ crew. Once he managed to flee, he was immediately thrust into a grand adventure that placed the destiny of the Jedi Order squarely in his hands, thereby making him a vital figure in the Star Wars narrative.

Over two games, Cal Kestis navigated his place in the Force, simultaneously working towards rebuilding what he could. With a resolute demeanor, he’s faced various adversaries, even the notorious Darth Vader. By the close of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, he uncovers the enigmatic planet Tanalorr and pledges to conceal Force-gifted individuals from the Empire. Although the future remains uncertain, it appears that Cal may emerge as a beacon of hope for future Jedi.

Star Wars Outlaws’ Kay Vess Just Wants to Make Ends Meet

In the game “Star Wars Outlaws”, Kay Vess appears to lack a greater mission, instead focusing on mere survival across the cosmos. Initially residing in an attic on Canto Bight, she yearns for something beyond her current life. This longing propels her into accepting a risky job, but things quickly spiral out of control, leaving her no choice but to escape the planet aboard a stolen vessel. The ensuing events lead her to encounter some of the most notorious criminal organizations in the galaxy, forcing her to perform various deeds as she tries to establish herself among them.

Kay Vess might encounter both the Rebel Alliance and Empire, but she’s not particularly inclined towards heroism like Cal Kestis. Instead, her main goal is merely to stay alive, doing whatever it takes to achieve that. This shift in focus results in a distinctly unique gaming experience, marking a significant deviation from traditional Star Wars protagonists. Previously, most of these characters have played significant roles within the galaxy, with one even being the chosen one.

In the galaxy, Kay Vess and Cal Kestis play significantly distinct roles, which adds an interesting dynamic. If all characters shared the responsibility of shaping the galaxy’s future, it might become monotonous quickly. Fortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the case, making it intriguing to see where the franchise will lead these characters next. Their stories appear to be just beginning, so it will be exciting to follow their journeys.
