Similar to most Pokémon games, FireRed and LeafGreen feature eight Gym Leaders to challenge and eight badges to earn in the Kanto region. Collecting all eight badges is essential to become a Pokémon master and gain access to the Pokémon League and the Elite Four.
This guide covers everything you need to know about the Gym Leaders in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, including their Pokemon teams and the prizes you’ll receive after defeating them.
Brock – Pewter City Gym
Rock-Type Leader
Your first challenge comes from Brock, the Gym Leader of Pewter City. How difficult the battle is depends on which starter Pokémon you picked from Professor Oak. If you chose Bulbasaur or Squirtle, you’ll likely have an easier time, but other Pokémon might make the fight tougher.
Squirtle, the Water-type starter, learns the move Bubble at level 7 and Water Gun at level 13. Bulbasaur, another starter, learns Vine Whip at level 10. Using Vine Whip alongside Leech Seed (learned at level 7) can help you easily defeat the Rock-type trainer.
| Team | Type | Weakness(es) |
|---|---|---|
| Geodude (Lv 12) | Rock/Ground | Water, Fighting, Grass, Steel, Ground |
| Onix (Lv 14) | Rock/Ground | Water, Fighting, Grass, Steel, Ground |
After defeating Brock and his two Pokémon, you’ll receive TM39, Rock Tomb. You’ll also unlock the HM Flash, which lets you illuminate dark caves even when you’re not battling.
Misty – Cerulean City Gym
Water-Type Leader
In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the second Gym Leader you’ll battle is Misty, who specializes in Water-type Pokémon. She’s located in Cerulean City. Both of her Pokémon are especially vulnerable to Grass-type attacks, so if you chose Bulbasaur as your starter, you should have an easy time winning!
| Team | Type | Weakness(es) |
|---|---|---|
| Staryu (Lv 18) | Water | Electric, Grass |
| Starmie (Lv 21) | Water/Psychic | Electric, Grass, Bug, Dark, Ghost |
After defeating Misty, you’ll receive TM03, which teaches the Water Pulse attack. You’ll also unlock the ability to use the Cut HM to clear obstacles like trees as you explore.
Lt. Surge – Vermilion City Gym
Electric-Type Leader
In Vermilion City, you can challenge Lt. Surge at his Electric-type Gym. He uses three Pokémon, and all of them are weak against Ground-type attacks.
| Team | Type | Weakness(es) |
|---|---|---|
| Voltorb (Lv 21) | Electric | Ground |
| Pikachu (Lv 18) | Electric | Ground |
| Raichu (Lv 24) | Electric | Ground |
After winning against Surge, you’ll unlock the ability to quickly travel around the map using the HM for Fly. You’ll also receive the TM for Shock Wave, a powerful Electric-type move.

Erika – Celadon City Gym

Koga – Fuchsia City Gym
Poison-Type Leader
Okay, so I just battled Koga, the Gym Leader in Fuchsia City, and let me tell you, his whole team is Poison-type! It wasn’t too bad though – I brought Pokemon that knew Psychic and Ground moves, and that totally worked! Just a heads-up, his Pokemon will try to poison you, so it’s a good idea to pack a few Antidotes just in case. Definitely helped me out!
| Team | Type | Weakness(es) |
|---|---|---|
| Koffing (Lv 37) | Poison | Ground, Psychic |
| Muk (Lv 39) | Poison | Ground, Psychic |

Defeating Koga will reward you with TM06: Toxic, and you’ll then be able to use the Surf HM to travel on water.
You can battle Koga and Sabrina in either order, but we suggest taking on Koga first, since Sabrina can be a tougher opponent.
Sabrina – Saffron City Gym
Psychic-Type Leader
Sabrina is a memorable character from the Pokemon anime, famous for challenging Ash and his friends with her powerful Psychic-type Pokemon. Ash ultimately had to catch a Ghost-type Pokemon to overcome her team.

Blaine – Cinnabar Island Gym
Fire-Type Leader
At Blaine’s Gym on Cinnabar Island, you’ll need to answer trivia questions to earn the right to battle him. He specializes in Fire-type Pokémon, and his Arcanine at level 47 will be the toughest opponent. However, using Water or Rock-type moves will give you a significant advantage and help you win!

After defeating Blaine, you’ll receive the powerful TM for Fire Blast, and you’ll also unlock the ability to use Waterfall anywhere in the game world.
Giovanni – Viridian City Gym
Ground-Type Leader
Finally, you’ll face off against Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, in Viridian City. He has a strong team of Ground and Rock Pokémon, so be sure to bring Water and Grass-type Pokémon to make the battle easier and help you advance to the Elite Four.
