We got a sneak peek at the new character for Mortal Kombat 1 – Conan the Barbarian. He’ll start fighting in Mortal Kombat 1 on January 21, 2025, as part of the game’s extra content called Kombat Pack 2.
Mortal Kombat 1 appears set to be one of the most captivating installments in the series, thanks largely to its innovative approach to revising the established timeline of the franchise. This revision opens up a host of fresh and imaginative perspectives on familiar events. Furthermore, the Mortal Kombat universe has expanded by incorporating characters from popular films and television shows, like Ghostface from Scream and Homelander from The Boys. The latest character to enter from another dimension is Conan the Barbarian, a character inspired by the legendary 1982 fantasy film.
Alongside announcing the arrival date of Conan the Barbarian within Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Studios unveiled a gameplay trailer to demonstrate how Conan will engage in combat when he enters the arena. The video depicts Conan resembling the iconic actor Arnold Schwarzenegger from the film as he battles opponents such as Quan Chi, Kenshi, and Sub-Zero using his sword. Additionally, it showcases one of Conan’s devastatingly violent Fatalities.
Conan the Barbarian Brutalizes Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat 1 Gameplay Trailer
In a similar vein to the gruesome Fatalities seen in Mortal Kombat 1, Conan the Barbarian’s deadly move is exceptionally violent. The depicted Fatality features a medieval setting to align with the original movie’s style. Conan brutally kicks Quan Chi towards a nearby boiling cauldron, severing his arm. He then impales Quan Chi with his sword, forcing him into the hot liquid and extracting his clean, bone-free skull. The trailer concludes with a hint of his Animality, where Conan transforms magically into a massive bull to trample his adversary to death.
As a dedicated fan, I must say that while Conan, this towering musclebound warrior, may seem like a behemoth on the battlefield, he proves to be exceptionally nimble in close combat scenarios. The gameplay trailer showcases him executing an impressive series of swift sword combos at short range, yet opting for minimal long-range attacks, save for a comical moment where he throws his own kameo fighter towards his adversary. Although Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn’t lend his voice to Conan in Mortal Kombat 1, Chris Cox does an admirable job of embodying the character, much as he did when voicing the Terminator in Mortal Kombat 11, another character inspired by a legendary Schwarzenegger role.
In the next installment of Mortal Kombat, we anticipate another round of creative character choices. Some may appear unconventional at first, such as Peacemaker and Omni-Man, but they add an enjoyable twist to the gameplay by offering fresh perspectives on over-the-top violence.
