Concord May Have Caused a New God of War Game to Be Canceled

Summary

  • Concord’s failure led to the cancelation of a God of War game and other live-service projects at Sony.
  • Sony is reportedly reevaluating live service games due to Concord flop.
  • Live-service projects from Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio have been canceled.

It appears that the failed hero shooter game “Concord,” developed by Firewalk Studios, might be the reason behind Sony’s recent cancellations, including a God of War title in development. Known as one of the biggest flops in gaming industry history, “Concord” may have struggled to deliver enjoyable multiplayer matches but ultimately failed to attract players. Despite having ambitious live-service plans for the game, Concord was shut down shortly after its launch.

After Concord shut down, Firewalk Studios was also closed. Although Sony is rumored to continue developing live-service games after Concord’s cancellation, it has been revealed that two other live-service titles from the company have been canceled. Bend Studio, famous for Days Gone and Syphon Filter, was reportedly creating a live-service military shooter, but it won’t be released. Additionally, it appears that Bluepoint Games, known for Demon’s Souls, had been working on a God of War live-service project.

Sony has pulled the plug on two projects, and it seems there could be more information available about the reasons behind this move. According to Jeff Grubb on his Game Mess podcast, these decisions were a response to a situation known as Concord. Grubb stated that Sony is still reeling from the impact of Concord, and they are currently reviewing every studio project in detail. He also mentioned that the canceled projects were the primary games under development at the time.

Concord to Blame for Recent Live Service Cancelations

In a nutshell, a live-service version of the game “God of War” might have faced heavy criticism from the gaming community, whereas a live-service military shooter could have received more positive feedback. However, the significant flop of “Concord” has led Sony to reconsider their strategy regarding live-service games. While they may still work on live-service projects given that they own Bungie, the future seems to suggest fewer such ventures from Sony.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to share some disappointing news from the Sony universe. It’s not just God of War and Bend Studio’s new IP that have taken a hit in their live-service ventures. Back in 2023, The Last of Us Online was called off, and there are whispers that even a live-service Spider-Man game from Insomniac has been scrapped too. It’s hard to say what this means for Sony’s future lineup of exclusive first-party games, but I’m definitely intrigued about what they might be cooking up for the PS5 in the coming months.
