Concord Open Beta Player Numbers Aren’t Looking Too Good

Concord Open Beta Player Numbers Aren't Looking Too Good

Highlights

  • Concord’s open beta saw low player counts on Steam, raising doubts about its launch success.
  • Concord may face challenges against established titles like Overwatch and Valorant. However, a strong narrative could attract players over time.

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of highly anticipated games that didn’t quite live up to the hype. And it seems that Concord, the latest multiplayer first-person shooter from Firewalk Studios, may be heading down a similar path.

As the open beta weekend for “Concord” is approaching its end on July 21st, it appears that this upcoming PlayStation shooter hasn’t attracted a large following among PC gamers. The beta version, which is available for free on both PlayStation 5 and PC platforms, has seen relatively low engagement from the PC community.

Firewalk Studios, a new team within Sony’s PlayStation division, created the multiplayer first-person shooter called “Concord.” This game is part of PlayStation’s ongoing live-service project. As PlayStation’s first in-house first-person shooter since “Killzone: Shadow Fall” in 2013, fans were eager to see what “Concord” would offer. However, during the May State of Play presentation, it was revealed that “Concord” is a competitive 5v5 hero shooter. Criticisms about its lack of originality emerged immediately, but some still chose to test it out during beta phases.

Individuals who pre-ordered “Concord” on PC and PS5 users with an active subscription to PS Plus were granted entry to a recent closed beta testing phase. Notably, Firewalk Studios extended the duration of this private test by an extra day, potentially due to decreasing participation levels on Steam. Currently, all PS5 and PC gamers can participate in “Concord’s” free open beta without charge over the last three days. However, the general reaction towards this live-service game has been disappointing among PC users, as indicated by SteamDB data. The title reached its peak concurrent player count of 2,388 during the weekend open beta, but only 1,027 players were currently logged in at the time of reporting.

Concord’s Open Beta Will Conclude With Underwhelming PC Player Counts

Based on the open beta data, Concord‘s player numbers on PC don’t suggest a blockbuster launch for this AAA live-service title on PlayStation. Keep in mind that these statistics only represent the PC version of the game. The PS5 numbers could paint a different picture, but Sony hasn’t released that information yet. Regardless, despite leaving a positive impression during beta tests, Concord faces an uphill battle to gain popularity among established hero shooters such as Overwatch and Valorant when it launches on August 23.

The prospect of Concord achieving the same degree of surprise success as Helldivers 2 did upon its release in February is becoming less and less likely. Nevertheless, it’s not unusual for a live-service game to experience ups and downs throughout its lifetime. If the launch of Concord occurs during a downturn, Firewalk Studios still has an opportunity to draw players in over a more extended period by offering an engaging storyline and valuable content additions.
