269 years ago, on April 4, 1756, a man who was half British, half Mohawk by birth was welcomed into the world. This individual is more commonly recognized among Assassin’s Creed enthusiasts and members of the Assassin Brotherhood as Connor Kenway. In the year 2012, Connor made his debut in the mainline Assassin’s Creed series, becoming the fourth significant protagonist following Desmond Miles, Altair Ibn-La’Ahad, and Ezio Auditore da Firenze. He was also the final ancestor that Miles would relive memories of before his passing. Connor first appeared in Assassin’s Creed 3, eventually becoming one of the most beloved characters within the franchise, featuring in two additional games. As fans revisit Connor’s story due to Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we delve into an extensive exploration of his life, death, and enduring legacy within the series.
The Complicated Family of Connor Kenway
Initially, players diving into ‘Assassin’s Creed 3’ were already familiar with Connor’s ancestral lineage, which includes the legendary Assassins Altair Ibn-La’Ahad and Ezio Auditore da Firenze, as well as his relation to William and Desmond Miles. However, it wasn’t long before fans found themselves taken aback by the intricate and sorrowful nature of Connor’s immediate family history. Interestingly, the first three acts of the game allow players to inhabit Connor’s father, Haytham Kenway, who is unveiled as the Grand Master of the Colonial Rite, the arch-enemies of the Assassin Brotherhood, the Templar Order, marking the first time players control a Templar in the main storyline of ‘Assassin’s Creed’.
Assigned with setting up a Templar base in the British colonies, unveiling the Isu Grand Temple, and eradicating the Colonial Assassin Brotherhood, Haytham eventually met the Mohawk warrior Kaniehti꞉io, also known as Ziio, in 1754. In collaboration, Haytham and Ziio prevented the British from invading Mohawk lands and killed General Edward Braddock in 1755 during the French and Indian War.
In these occurrences, Haytham and another individual would temporarily engage in a romantic bond, resulting in Haytham unwittingly fathering Connor. Afterwards, Haytham departed to broaden Templar influence and annihilate the Colonial Assassin Brotherhood. Meanwhile, Ziio stayed in colonial New England, bringing up Connor in a humble Mohawk village by herself until 1760, when she met her unfortunate end at the hands of a British assault on the settlement.
Connor’s Discovery of his Assassin and Templar Lineage
At four years old, Connor lost his mother and was brought up by the villagers who vowed to help avenge her death. In 1769, they sent him on a quest to find Achilles Davenport, a disgraced mentor of the Colonial Assassin Brotherhood, in order for Connor to become an Assassin himself. Despite his initial reservations, Davenport took Connor under his wing and guided him in eliminating Templar leaders across both the British Empire and the American Patriots during the Revolutionary War. It was through his time with Davenport that Connor uncovered the identities of his father, Edward Kenway, a renowned early 18th-century Assassin, as well as his paternal grandfather. By 1778, Connor and Haytham would cross paths multiple times, each trying to sway the other towards their respective causes. However, in order to prevent his father from gaining control over the colonies, Connor was compelled to take his life.
Connor Kenway’s Life and Impact on Colonial America
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at Connor’s journey, torn between his family ties and the battle against the Templars to liberate North America. Yet, what truly sets him apart is his selflessness, resourcefulness, and warrior skills that shine through in every challenge he faces.
While under Davenport’s tutelage, I found myself standing on the edge of the Davenport Homestead bay, gazing upon a decaying vessel. With Captain Robert Faulkner by my side, we managed to breathe new life into this ship, which we christened the Aquila. This magnificent vessel served not only as a means to bolster Patriot and colonial forces but also as a trading platform for essential supplies. Moreover, it became our formidable weapon against the Templar naval forces that threatened us.
The Aquila played a crucial role in helping me reconnect with the scattered fragments of the Colonial Assassin Brotherhood. Aveline de Grandpre, based in Louisiana, was one such sister I had the privilege to reunite with, as depicted in Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation.

By the culmination of the Revolutionary War, Connor managed to dismantle much of the Templar influence within the burgeoning United States of America and started aiding other Assassins, particularly those in the Parisian Brotherhood. However, not every individual Connor assisted proved beneficial for the Assassins. In the game Assassin’s Creed 3, players have the opportunity to participate in Homestead missions that involve Connor rebuilding his Davenport estate, aiding struggling colonists, and inviting them to reside there. Additionally, Connor played a significant role in shaping the early days of the United States by providing direct assistance to key Founding Fathers like George Washington and the Sons of Liberty, as depicted in Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR.
The Death and Legacy of Connor Kenway
Following the fall of the Colonial Branch of the Templar Order, marked by the demise of Haytham Kenway and Charles Lee, Connor’s subsequent life remains largely shrouded in mystery. In the game ‘Assassin’s Creed 3’, it is revealed that his village was forced to leave after the U.S. government took and sold their land. However, Connor maintained connections with several American leaders, as demonstrated when he assisted in liberating Washington from nightmares instigated by an Apple of Eden during The Tyranny of King Washington DLC. Throughout this period, Connor also worked diligently to reestablish the Colonial Brotherhood, assuming its leadership role. He even enlisted Grandpre’s aid in recruiting Patience Gibbs, a former slave, in Rhode Island, as early as 1784.
After the Aveline DLC of Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, Connor doesn’t appear in any other games, but his later years are portrayed in books and comics. In the novel Assassin’s Creed: Forsaken, Connor studies Haytham’s journal to gain insights into his father’s early life and his true feelings towards Connor. In the comic Assassin’s Creed: Reflections, it becomes clear that Connor later joined another tribe and married an unidentified woman. They had three daughters, but only one, Io:nhiote, inherited the Eagle Vision ability seen in the Miles family line. This suggests that Io:nhiote might be Desmond Miles’ direct ancestor following Connor.
Connor Kenway’s Legacy in the Assassin’s Creed Franchise
In the Assassin’s Creed series timeline, we don’t know precisely when Connor Kenway passed away, but his influence and imprint on the franchise remain palpable forever. If not for Connor, it’s possible that the modern-day Assassins would never have emerged, leaving the Templars to potentially conquer not just the United States, but possibly the entire world. Through his actions, Connor laid the foundation for a superior breed of Assassins and set events in motion that ultimately allowed Desmond Miles to prevent global catastrophe in 2012. Moreover, he was the first significant Native American protagonist within the Assassin’s Creed franchise, which opened the door for more diverse characters and narratives in subsequent games. Though his story may have been contentious at its release, Connor has since gained greater acceptance among fans due to his intricate, multifaceted narrative and groundbreaking naval gameplay.
